Hey everyone! This one is personal for me. Ophelia is one of my favourite paintings of all time, and honestly it's a big part of why I started painting in the first place. I put extra work into this video because of how much this painting means to me. Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy it.

For anyone curious, the piano piece is Gnossienne No. 1 by Eric Satie

Hamlet took Ophelia’s innocence and then discarded her disrespectfully. She went mad at that point. Him killing her father was the cherry on top.

She is buried at Highgate Cemetery in London. She was also a talented artist herself.

A few years ago I played Claudius in a local production of Hamlet. My daughter, Cecilia, played Ophelia hauntingly. Even though my character had chosen wickedness and lived it out and therefore had no sympathy for Ophelia, inside, I wept every night for the shear tragedy of her life as portrayed by my daughter. This painting and your description of it with both layers of stories leaves me with the same aching but also beautiful sadness. Well done and thank you. I’m no artist but have subscribed.

The meaning and detail of the flowers is striking. I appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos.

When I was very young, my grandfather bought me a Reader’s Digest book of British history. This painting was in the book, along with the painting of the Brontes, with the brother erased. Both paintings totally terrified me.

My friends parents had this on the wall when I was a kid and I just thought it was an ethereal and beautiful woman floating in a river. It was only when I grew up I realized the tale behind the painting.

Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favourites of all time, I can't believe you've only been uploading for around 2 months considering the quality in your videos! Really educational and wonderful retrospective observation. I just know you'll become a really popular channel soon. I can't wait for more!

This painting has fascinated me since the first time I saw it, in college a (very!) long time ago. Thank you for broadening my understanding (and therefore my appreciation) of it.

Dante treated her horribly, was a horrible person all around. Cheated on her endlessly (while they lost their child too) which was a huge part of her depression. And he had continued an affair long after she was was gone with his friend's wife. got a house next to them like a snake so the affair would be easier for him. he also buried Elizabeth with verse of poems because of the guilt he felt in perhaps contributing to her death, and then guess what, few short years later he regretted doing so, had her dug up so he could have his disgusting rotting book of poems instead of leaving her in peace. it was said that her beautiful red hair filled her coffin, and for a brief moment before the air decintigrated her remains, she looked beautiful, like a freshly burried body. Elizabeth herself was a very accommplished poet, I think Dante was jealous of her.
