Sinners was the first time i walked out of a movie knowing kids in 20 years would wish they could see it for the first time in theaters, and then realizing thats what people mean when they say "instant classic"

i love sinner's returning to traditional vampirism, specifically in terms of the need-permission-to-enter thing because i think its so much scarier when they behave like tunnel-visioned animals yet still doing it within the framework of their former person... cornbread stands at the door unrelentingly but he still talks and cracks jokes like his old self, but its so single-minded that it becomes uncanny, i love that so much it gave me goosebumps in the theatre
but yeah you just made realize this choice to depict them is empathetic, these vampires are still themselves and have access to their former personalities, just cut off from humanity, its sad

“even if we don’t have any formal art education, we respond with visceral disgust to the idea that art should just be a matter of just replicating the safest aspects of what came before” HARD quote

Also worth mentioning, old Sammie was played by Buddy Guy. One of the greatest blues legends of all time. As a love letter to the blues I can't think of a better cameo

Cried my eyes out when the vampire talked about the English using religion to oppress his people, and still finding comfort in the words. Such a tiny monologue summing up what a complex thing religion is. It can be weaponised to decimate a culture and a thing that gives people hope. Did not expect that in the final act of the film.

"...the reason genres like blues and Irish folk go so hard is because they were made by people who were constantly having to insist upon their own humanity, and humanity is, in a very real way, made through art. Art and humanity mutually create each other. It's a truly self-contained system, both argument and justification, in the same way that God is the father and also the son." (15:30)

jaw audibly dropped at this spitfire of a line

One of the things that is so tragic about the story is that Remmick mentions the bulldozing of his culture by the English and the imposition of their culture and beliefs on him and his people, while either failing to recognize or failing to care that he is ultimately doing the exact same thing through his vampirism.
He speaks of peace and "unity", but the people he turns no longer sing their own songs or dance their own dances. Remmick imposes his culture and will onto the people he consumes. While he lives, the thralls are not themselves, but themselves by way of Remmick, while he gets to take their bodies, language and even their memories for himself.

"We can't be doing this to kids, we can't be giving them this depleted cultural soil." — Another banger line in a video full of them. No notes!

Here's Ryan Coogler on why Remmick is Irish, via indiewire: "I'm obsessed with irish folk music -- my kids are obsessed with it... Look, my first name is Irish! I think it's not known how much crossover there is between African American culture and Irish culture, and how much that stuff is loved in our community. It was very important that our master vampire was unique, and as specific as the situation was. It was important to me that he was old and from a time that pre-existed these racial definitions, so he would seem odd, and it would all seem odd to him. But also that he would see it for what it was, and he would offer a sweet deal, and that the music was just as beautiful."

15:44 this reminds of my favorite James Baldwin quote about art: "You read something which you thought only happened to you, and you discover that it happened 100 years ago to Dostoyevsky. This is a very great liberation for the suffering, struggling person, who always thinks that he is alone. This is why art is important. Art would not be important if life were not important, and life is important."

I shared this in the Dead Meat Podcast comments, but I'll put it here too: Remmick having a banjo is a thematic detail to me, bc it's an instrument from West Africa that's been brought so thoroughly into white (southern, american) culture that we don't think of it as "foreign".

Also, I saw someone online point out that the version of "Wild Mountain Thyme" we hear in Sinners wouldn't be recorded until the 1950s; I personally like to think Remmick heard it when Sammie performed, and that glimpse of the future was what drove him to the hunt

It’s interesting how Grace and Bo run shops on opposing sides of the segregated street, acting as a bridge between communities in a way that’s been forced upon them. Much like later on when Grace ultimately “lets them in” after her child has been threatened. I had this chilling feeling in the theater that this was the moment (for me) that the prospect of becoming a vampire was at its most repulsive and simultaneously at its most convincing and alluring. Like a dehumanizing cycle of oppression that incentivizes compromising your growth and your better nature because it seems like the “better evil”. I think it’s no mistake that rather than becoming a vampire herself, grace burns to death.
