  Those of us that grew up with loudness button, always knew the value. At lower volumes it was ALWAYS on!

  So the "loudness" button was basically a preconfigured graphic equalizer.

  I am now a recovering Audiophile. I drank the Coolaid for a while but now I have resigned to just listening to my music. The ideology includes tone controls and yes, the loudness control and now I really enjoy my music once again.  Thanks for exposing the Elephant in the room, Randy !

  Yamaha was the first company to realize that  a variable loudness control was necessary as we all hear differently at various volume levels. I spent a year in the psycho acoustics lab at my college doing my senior thesis. And it is indeed a fact, that we as humans, all have significant hearing differences within a typical population .

  This video is incredibly valuable. A lot of people will resist this, but the difference is so, so clear. For me, it’s the biggest night and day difference in my system. More than speakers, amp, deck etc. I live in a flat in London and that loudness button is on constantly. People won’t like it because you can get a great vintage amp with loudness for a couple hundred dollars. But to hear you explain this - correct tone, rather than ‘pure’ tone - is going to open so many people’s eyes 🫡

  Retired live sound engineer here. I've been building amplifiers and speakers since I was a teenager, always in a quest for flat, full range sound. But once I became a sound engineer, I learned the name of the game is "know what you want, and know how to get it". I'm not shy about applying whatever EQ I need on any channel or main PA until each instrument sounds how I think it should. The physics of mics, rooms, and pickups apply huge changes to instruments and voices, well beyond the tiny fraction of a percent distortion in the equipment chain. I use my skill and experience to know how a piano or an oboe is supposed to sound, and I work to get than in the audience space.  I've gotten plenty of compliments on my mixes. Engineers put their artistic stamp on their mixes, like every performing artist does on stage. Why shouldn't listeners? Don't be shy about crafting a sound in your room that brings you joy and excitement. I use variable loudness compensation all the time at all volume levels, and people tell me how much they like the warm and full sound I create. Get a multi band parametric equalizer and use it to create your best expression of beauty in your music.
