As an African, we express our sorrow in different ways- by quiet hurt, or shouting or just silence and it echoes through time and space. And we understand each other through music. Thank you Stromae for the gift of this song

"Where Are You Dad" This wonderful and powerful song "Papaoutai" of 2026 sung in French by Afro Soul (a play on Papa, où t'es? or "Dad, where are you?") is a deeply emotional song about the pain of growing up with an absent, deceased father, inspired by and updated from the 2013 hit Papaoutai by Stromae reflecting his own experience losing his dad in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It explores childhood loneliness, the void left by a missing parent, and the longing for paternal guidance. For those who would like a translation of this incredible song from the French:

Tell me where he comes from
Finally I'll know where I'm going
Mom says that when you look hard enough
You always end up finding it
She says he's never very far away
That he often goes away to work
Mom says, "Working is good"
Much better than being in bad company
Isn't that right?
Where is your dad?
Tell me, where is your dad?
Without even having to talk to him
He knows what's wrong
Ah, dear Dad
Tell me, where are you hiding?
I must have
Counted my fingers at least a thousand times

Hey
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, where are you, Papaoutai?

What? Believe it or not, there will come a day when we no longer believe.
Sooner or later, we will all be fathers.
And from one day to the next, we will have disappeared.
Will we be detestable?
Will we be admirable?
Progenitors or geniuses?
Tell us, who gives birth to the irresponsible?
Ah, tell us who?

Hey, everyone knows how babies are made
But nobody knows how dads are made
Mr. Know-It-All must have inherited it, right?
Do you have to suck it out of your thumb or what?
Tell us where it's hidden, we must have
Bited our fingers at least a thousand times

Hey
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, Papaoutai?
Where are you, where are you, Papaoutai?

There is something in these African beats or however you'd like to call them that brings something primordial in a human being. Like we feel our ancestors with every heart beat. People may not understand French but we all understand the rhythm and soul. Extraordinary song (unfortunately, it's a sad song about the boy and his father).
