One great example of prior virtual production that goes unmentioned in this video: Oblivion. They employed a ton of rear projection for sets like the “sky house” so that the actors felt immersed and the camera was actually capturing all the elements in real-time.

Don't forget that one of the reasons they used LED for the Mandalorian is because Dinn has a very shiny helmet so instead of paying a lot of time and money to reproduce reflections they used the "volume"

Led volumes are being used signficantly more now for filming than they were when mandalorian came out. Its just then it was new fancy technology then so it was being spoken about more, and now the dust has settled. I watched project hail mary last night and LED volumes are used throughout.

The reality of a dinner room in a soap opera looking more real than the mind blowing CGI landscape.

Actually, this reflects the usual and expected Innovation Diffusion curve: First a new tech is barely available and considered strange and even "crazy", then it becomes cool and more available to early adopters, then it becomes more common so reluctant late adopters and vocal skeptics start saying it is overhyped and then, the technology is widely available and integrated into everyday life so you don't hear about it anymore. For evidence just study or recall the adoption of cars, airplanes, microwaves, HDTV, the Internet, electric vehicles, etc.
I remember working for one of the early creators of HDTV and people would be blown away by prototypes but say "Sure, the picture's great but who needs a 'huge' 35" TV when it costs $2500 and there's nothing to watch on it." They weren't wrong (for a little while), then everybody had to have one. Now you walk into a fast food restaurant and they're using 5 or 6 60" HDTVs as "wallpaper" to sell burgers.

Having worked on a few large volume projects the biggest issues we ran into were human. No creatives at the top wanted to commit to a particular aesthetic early on in the film making process and boredom. Film crews like going to exotic places to film. More fun than a dark studio!

If you just compare a volume vs green screen, I also think there's a financial aspect. Not that one of them is cheaper or more expensive in total, but that a volume need more work - and thus money - up front, while green screen is (very simplified) "let's put up a green screen, do the shots, and then we fix it in post" - thus not spending a lot of money until you actually can see the footage. The early up-front cost have a tendency to scare producers and investors.

A lot of clients dont want to use it anymore. What was happening was that things would be filmed against these screens, but then we would replace/redo those backgrounds in regular cg afer the fact anyway. It made things more expensive in many cases.

Felt vertically limited and the light still felt weird. But when it works, it's amazinh

One of the big attractions not mentioned here is the ability to ‘sync’ the virtual camera in Unreal Engine with the real life camera in the studio.
This means parallax and perspective is spot on with real time movement. That was the big WOW factor when we first used it. Mind you there’s a lot that can go wrong on the technical front, and it requires a lot of planning and training of crew to optimise your time in the Volume studio.

I think that another reason that "The Volume" specifically fell out of popularity is that as a viewer, it became very easy to see when a shot was filmed on a volume after it received so much publicity and hype. Every time I saw a somewhat circular set where people clearly tended to not move beyond certain boundaries with a somewhat out of focus background I would think "oh this must have been filmed in the volume." All of the sudden my immersion in the story was gone and now I'm looking at my phone googling "did X film use the volume?" After a few times, it became so obvious when it was used that it actually took me out of the film.
