Love this concise but thorough description of the interdisciplinary approach to this project. I'm an archvist, so I was excited to see the impact that archives had in confirming what science had revealed.

Our colonial beginnings were more complex and interesting in terms of who came and why than the mythology that developed over time allowed for. It may have been 419 years ago but in historic terms it was yesterday. NPS and Preservation Virginia, great work ongoing and fighting the rising tide in the James River. And Dr. Kelso, thank you for never giving in to the myth that the fort and the graves were long eroded into that river.

Interdisciplinary scientific sleuthing at its best. This is yet another reason why scientific expertise is so important, and why it needs to be cherished by society and not scoffed at.

On a lighter note, could you imagine bringing Winman and West back today and trying to explain to them exactly how we cracked their case? They'd be making the sign of the cross for sure!
Truly an amazing timeline we live in. Thanks for the video.🕵️♂️

Covert bastardy was fairly common throughout history, making up perhaps a percent or so of all births, DNA testing put an end to it.

Within a period of a short few days in August 1607, a large number of the original individuals died. They would have been buried in simple graves with wooden crosses as depicted in some videos. To my knowledge, no DNA analysis has been performed on any of these individuals nor have they been definitively located and exhumed for DNA analysis. But one of the men was Francis Midwinter, described in the ship's register as "gentleman". That family name is of interest to me as mine is also Midwinter, descending from a long line of Midwinters from the Cotswaods, including one prominent wool trader by the name of William Midwinter who died in 1501. I would love to know the origins of this Francis, but can find no information about him. Do any of you know of any work regarding these other individuals and any attempt to identify where they came from and from what families? So, please respond to my comment. Thanks. 🇨🇦

The English surname Blount is pronounced Blunt, not Blownt. Also, when you were talking about the element lead, Pb, you said lead pronounced leed, instead.

Watching from Buffalo, New York, USA, April 17, 2026. This Old Bat is not surprised that hanky panky (fooling around with folks not the spouses) was going on. It all ways has been and more than likely always will be. #chuckles#
