Always record night ops. You definitely get an ego check, but as time goes by you notice improvements and you are more cognizant of bad habits. Also catch the craziest things. Once, I was down range 200 yards to retrieve the gongs, and a truck pulled up next to my vehicle. I started heading back with at least 100lbs of gongs and gear, then I noticed the driver had a rifle... I HUSTLED back thinking he might start shooting my way not knowing I was out there (cardio engaged), but I started closing in, my headset started picking up crying.... dude was going down the dark path that night... I walked up and to not startle him I adorably said: "Hi friend, wanna talk about it under the stars?"... dude saw full predator gear... his first question was "are those night vision goggles?" Dude was out there to end it all, but we had a good talk... recorded 45 minutes of two bros just talking about life and women.... His brother called as I started to pack it up... Seemed way better when I left. Got home and rewatched the vid cuz I still could not believe that all happened. I got to watch myself sprint with gear and gongs and then become a therapist under a minute.

Also, Hop,

I bridge a sidekick640 and I found the brightness to intense (even after firmware update), so I used a piece of my wife's thin high thigh nylon sock (i think its nylon, you can see through it when stretched) to suppress the lightening over the ocular lens (stretched and held in place by the rubber eye piece) and it so helps the brain and eyes over long nights. The Nocturn Industries Onyx Filter (Black and White) on the WP nod is a game changer when rocking a thermal. Highly recommend trying it.

Love your work, and I am definitely going to look into the recorder you use.

Sometimes I also say goon with its classical definition in mind, not its current definition.

Goon meant different things back then-

Thanks for the shout dude! We shoot a lot of NV footage through the GREC and its a pretty versatile peice of kit.

As for mirrorless stuff I wrote this to a big news outlet who purchased one of the adapters and asked for some advice with em. Some video/photo lingo below for those who work with media.

---

We film primarily with Sony A7SIIIs and are most familiar with those cameras, so settings will vary depending on your setup. That said, a few general principles apply across the board.

When filming through a PVS-14 using our adapters, keep in mind that the PVS-14 captures an image via the objective lens, amplifies ambient light through the intensifier, and projects it back onto the ocular lens. In other words, you’re capturing an image of an image, similar to recording a phone screen.

Typical Sony A7SIII Settings:

ISO: 12,800: this is the higher dual base ISO for the A7SIII. On other cameras, experiment with the higher of their dual base ISOs. Dynamic range isn’t a big factor since NV footage is monochromatic. Most of the noise you will see in NV footage will be from the device itself scintillating not the digital noise from the camera

Aperture: f/4–f/8: I primarily use aperture to control exposure for NV video and photography.

Shutter: 1/48: for 24fps footage, this maintains a 180° shutter angle and allows a lot of light in.

Color Settings: I shoot in LOG (S-LOG3) to access the higher base ISO, but since NV footage is monochrome, any color or log profile works as long as you can correct it in post.

Additional Shooting Tips:

Set the PVS-14 diopter (rear lens) to 0.

Set your camera lens to manual focus and focus it on the PVS-14 diopter; leave it there. Use the PVS-14’s objective lens for subject focus.

Because the PVS-14 has an f/1.2 aperture, focus pulls are difficult. It’s often best to set it to infinity and control subject distance instead.

Lens choice: Stick between 24mm–50mm (full-frame).

50mm gives a tight, detailed image of the tube projection.

24mm captures the full field of view.

Wider or longer focal lengths tend to reduce usable image quality.

Fast lenses aren’t necessary; the NV tube is already optimized for the human eye and outputs a decent amount of brightness. I usually stop down slightly to improve edge-to-edge clarity.

A 24-70mm zoom (full frame) covers most useful focal lengths.

Keep the PVS-14 close to the host lens to avoid vignetting, as the ocular is designed for roughly 25mm of eye relief. Primes are better because they are smaller and lenses that can get the objective and lens aperture closer to the NOD work better (small Sony G Primes)

The PVS-14 provides a 1x magnification with a 40° FOV, so expect a somewhat “punched-in” image—compose accordingly.

The setup with telescope phone holder + cellphone is by far the best looking footage.

I run the DLSR+NV because it's far less jank to deal with.
