This is not about the press, it’s about the bench press.

I think the important question for adult men is “if you knuckle down and try in the gym with consistency and proper technique for several years, what are your odds of getting to 100kg?”

And the answer is very high

I'm 43. First-time lifter, blue-collar worker, 10 weeks in, I'm up to 80kg. The first 4 weeks were wasted due to poor form.

I think this is the first road to a larger bench video I've seen that I actually trust. Last year at 46 I had the goal of hitting a 200lb bench. The most i had ever benched before was probably 165lb in my early 30s. It was never a staple exercise in my recreational lifting. At my strongest I ended up repping 170 for 7 in my working sets. When I finally worked up the courage to try for a 1rm I got my wife to spot me and hit 195 for 1. Felt pretty good. Next I tried 205 for 1 and got the bar just halfway up and couldn't. Well, I just turned 47 the other day and I've recently started benching again after taking a year to focus on back, legs, and my inclines. My first workout this past week I only tried 140, and did a couple sets of 10 and one 7 before I gassed out. I plan on using your advice and focus on lower reps, getting my body used to the heavier loads. I am hitting 200 this year, even if it kills me haha

Hitting 100kg took me about 1.5yrs doing starting strength having never lifted before. Getting from 100 to 120kg only took another 4 months. Hoping to hit 140kg in 2027.

Very good advice! I personally don't bench, I am training for climbing, so bench isn't that useful, but I got up to 75 kg x 5 at 70 kg body weight when I trained for it for a few months. Mathematically, I should have been able to hit 90 kg for a single, but I'm certain I wouldn't have managed that. So, bottom line is 100 kg might have been possible, but only with at least 2-3 years of training for benching and possibly gaining more weight (which I didn't want to, so meh...).

I can't bench press 100 kg despite being a very long going gym bro. When I was young, we didn't have the knowledge or equipment on how to best train and my best ever bench press was 92.5 kg when I was 28 but I trained hard. Today, I'm trying to build up to 100 kg but age is now against me, although I have recently lifted 92.5 kg again. I train hard, use a number of recommended training strategies like slow bench press, explosive bench press, narrow and wide grip, volume and strength work etc. but gains are slow. I weigh around 93 kg and look very muscular for my age. My theory is that I just don't have enough of the fast twitch muscles needed as I'm not good at any strength exercises.

forget bench press unless it really fits you, the body mechanics are very different and I really think most people should not bench press at all because it hurts you

So what about bench press with dumbells is it harder with dumbbells

Hi mate, enjoyed this video. The GTO doesn't 'switch on', and is not the reason for a sticking point. Its just a feedback loop to stop you increasing force output; its inversely proportional to the MU count recruited. Even at 50% of 1RM, there is notable GTO reflex ongoing; at 100% muscle contraction, you will hit maximal GTO; it doesn't 'kick in' and cause force loss; it just stops a linear force production to the point we detach soft tissue. It simply creates diminishing response to higher neural signalling. We can show this with EMG data.

The point I'm making is it doesn't suddenly kick in mid lift, if anything, it would kick in at the very start of the lift from the chest as this is where force is highest but this is not how it works.

Your lift failed here because this is the point of the lift where active tension is only moderate, and passive tension is non-existent. (At the bottom, passive tension is huge due to stretch, and near lock out active tension is huge due to leverage). That position will always be your weakest part of the lift (mechanically speaking).

Really appreciated this video! Thanks
