It is very hard for me to write this. I remember him playing and streaming Arena kings precovid when he was still a student in Stanford. I was literally his only viewer. I remember he said in his stream that "I am glad you are here. It would be very lonely without you." And that comment stayed with me. One time I asked him on his stream why he played chess and he replied: "Because chess is a self contained beauty and it consumes me when I play it."
He was accustomed to having sleepless nights because he was a student and a chessplayer at the sametime. In recent months, I was surprised that he was always online and playing nonstop. I thought he is used to this but this is not healthy for sure and he needs rest. I remember this year his blitz rating dropped to 2800 for a brief moment because he just kept losing very fast. He played extremely fast and lost so many games. Then Kramnik twitted something like: "It seems that the proctor is finally working." with a screenshot of his losses. He pretended these things didn't affect him, but he was a very sensitive soul, and he felt them more than normal people. He was deeply hurt by the fact that his image had been damaged. This constant bullying for sure had a terrible effect on his mental health. I remember when I first started watching him, what stood out was his rage after losing. He expected so much from himself. He was a perfectionist and always felt he needed to do better. Probably, it came from the fact he was the first generation American and he felt the pressure to excel. Chess for him became more and more an escape from the outside world until it consumed him completely. I am going to remember him for his witty remarks, cringe puns, soviet old school jokes, funny impersonations, incredible speed of play, sharp tactical vision and amazing stalemate tricks. Hopefully you are flagging somebody up there now, Danya. Rest in peace.

If he did poorly, it was proof that he was cheating. If he did great, it was proof that he was cheating. This was cemented on his mind and, for him, there was no escape from the accusations. What a fucking heartbreaking mess. A life destroyed by a grumpy, jealous and crazy old man. "Who cares if one more light goes out? Well, I do". You were a very bright light, Danya.

Insane that Kramnik watched the last hour of this and thought it was ok to tweet a light-hearted "don't do drugs."

The part everyone needs to see 2:27:49 "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, people assume I'm cheating if i start playing well". Horrible. Kramnik went and attacked and attacked and attacked this innocent young man for no valid reason. Only out of jealousy, hatred, and envy for this person's talents. Look at what it did to Danya's mind. He couldn't even play well without being afraid of the judgement of others.

"The issue is just the lingering effect of it"... This makes me cry. He was hurting so bad.

@2:26:38 It doesn't change anything, but I'm glad his last streamed game was one he felt proud of.
