The fact that nothing romantic happens between Hester and John gave me such relief. I hate when romantic plotlines are shoehorned where there don't need to be just on account of two characters being of the opposite gender.

leaving the details of the abuse out is actually a genius move. everyone has a different threshold for trauma. leaving it to the reader to imagine that it’s was simply as bad as it needed to be.

"You have watched her decay so closely that it almost looks like growth" that hid so hard. This is why your reviews are so excellent Frankie

Very interesting that so much of this story is about assault, bodies both natural and human being taken advantage of, and Hester herself finding eroticism in scenarios where she's with men she doesn't like. Hester clings onto the illusion of control. She attempts to control her emotions, the law, other people, her own body, all with the super power that is money and stubbornness. Her erotic choice to be with men who disgust her can easily be read as her attempting control at repeating past experiences, but where she now has the power of choice.

It's fascinating that her friendship with Robert ends with her shooting herself in the foot. She unknowingly befriends an assaulter, which only makes her feel worse about herself, and ends with self-harm. Robert quite literally triggers her trauma. He teaches her to shoot, buys her a gun, then assaults a woman. There's just so many ways you can extract from the text that she's a victim of assault without the author actually saying it. Because of course Hester can't say it. All the other events in the story, and their inclusion in the narrative, have to say what Hester cannot.

Also interesting how John becomes obsessed with the idea of the Earth being polluted and assaulted. One could read John's activism as projection. The wolf didn't harm him, a human did. To John, nature was blameless and perfect. But a man took him from the relative safety of nature and violated him. He now projects that violation onto pollution and his violent activism against it. John comes across as someone who has "forgiven" his abuser, but he really just acts out his own vengeance against an intangible thing like "the system."

It's such a good dichotomy between the characters Hester and John. Hester can't dare even speak about her assault, but she can identify the abuser and direct her anger and vengeance to him. John can speak on his, but he can't direct his anger to the man who did it because he's already dead! So instead, John has to create an entity to be angry at, and he chooses to be angry at the system. And of course, because the system took his father away. In contrast, Hester chooses to rely on and work within the system throughout her life. And of course, the system took her abuser away. Both their anger and bitterness about their past abuse take over their lives and make them into these isolated, righteously angry people. John's blowing up the mine IS the completion of his own revenge narrative, and parallels Hester's. We don't even know if John survived the bombing.
