  As a midwestern man. It&apos;s only right that you stand outside and watch if you see a tornado. Then pat your house 2 times while you give thanks for everything it&apos;s done for the family before you take shelter

  Pro tip for phones: when storms hits, power outages may knock out local cell towers, your phone searching for data will drain the battery. Switch to &quot;sms only&quot; to save battery and more reliably send texts.

  My uncle lived in a trailer. Every time there was a tornado watch/warning he and his wife and their eight chihuahuas came over to our house to ride out the weather. Imagine the chaos, six adults, four children eight chihuahuas, and two backyard dogs let in the house. Our house looked like it was hit by a tornado without actually experiencing a real tornado. Pure &nbsp;Southern family insanity.

  An EF4 hit my house in 2015.. spent all day under tornado watches, warnings, and sirens, a typical spring day in TX, to the point I was ignoring it.. saw that black cloud with green flash out the southwest window and that’s when shit got real. Went to my safe space, heard the “train”, tornado came, prayed and pleaded with God..then it was done. Not much you can do but have a plan, know the signs, and pray.

  My fav hurricane story.<br>The news said Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on Texas City/Galveston, where my Dad lived. &nbsp;I called him up and he said &quot;Don&apos;t worry, we&apos;re going to Beaumont to ride it out.&quot;. &nbsp;Next day the news said it had turned, as was gonna hit Beaumont, so I called my Dad again. &nbsp;He said &quot;Don&apos;t worry, we&apos;re gonna head east into Lousiana and stay with some people.&quot;. &nbsp;Next day they said it was gonna hit Lousiana, so I called my dad and said &quot;Dad, you&apos;ll never guess where that hurricane is headed now!&quot;, and he replied &quot;I know where it is. &nbsp;I think I got it hitched to the back of my pickup.&quot;

  So here&apos;s a crazy story: we actually had a tornado save our lives. Our storm cellar was in our garage, and there was a tornado warning for our area. While sitting down there waiting for the storm to pass we all started feeling weird - light-headed and just really out of it. It was so odd and off-putting we decided to take our chances with the tornado, and after a few minutes of being out of the cellar we felt better. Once the storm passed and nothing really happened where the tornado was concerned, my mom called the fire department as she suspected there was some kind of leak and sure enough it was a gas leak. We would have never known about it if we hadn&apos;t gone into the cellar that day.

  I&apos;d add one more commandment: Thou shalt pile into the home of the closest neighbor with a basement / house not on wheels, and be sure to provide snacks for the inconvenience. We always piled into our next door neighbor&apos;s basement when I was growing up (if we had enough time to scramble over there) because we didn&apos;t have one. I didn&apos;t mind too much. They had an elaborate model train set down there, plus a beat up screened-in porch upstairs for the dads to congregate on to yell at the storm. My family&apos;s role in the neighborhood storm system was The Ones with the Gas Appliances, so folks with electric could come heat up food or finish drying their clothes after the tornado warning / actual tornado passed if the electricity was out awhile. <br><br>Other consistent neighborhood storm roles include: Guy with a Working Chainsaw (for clearing debris), Nosy Neighbor with Police Scanner (who will provide unsolicited reports on damage and road closures), and Elderly Woman Who Appears After the Storm with Fresh Baked Goods (she is magic).
