Why the Best Leaders Make It Safe to Fail (and Worth It to Speak Up) with Stephen Shedletzky

Stephen "Shed" Shedletzky has spent over a decade helping leaders do something most others get completely wrong: creating a culture where people actually want to speak up. As author of Speak Up Culture: When Leaders Truly Listen, People Step Up and former chief of staff to Simon Sinek, he's worked with organizations across the globe to build teams where vulnerability isn't a liability—it's the foundation. Here's what makes him different from most leadership voices: he doesn't talk about fixing people. He talks about building systems that make it safe and worth it for people to bring their whole selves to work. And he's honest about the fact that psychological safety isn't always comfortable. Sometimes the most important conversations happen in spaces that don't feel "safe," they feel necessary. In this conversation, Foster and Shed explore: The four-quadrant framework of psychological safety and why one quadrant most leaders avoid is where real change happens What "speak up culture" actually means (and why it's different from just "speaking up") How vulnerability in leadership isn't weakness—it's the oxygen your team needs Making your leadership definition behavioral, not positional Why copying someone else's career path (even someone you admire) is a shortcut to disappointment The unexpected connection between his grandfather's story and modern leadership How to build a culture where people feel heard, not just listened to If you lead people. If you're building a team. If you've ever wondered why some organizations have people who want to show up and others just have people who comply—this changes how you think about your job.
