I started smoking a pipe 63 years ago and started Iwan Ries’ Three Star Blue Aromatic which almost caused me to stop smoking pipes, but fortunately a buddy in college had me get some Balkan Sobranie and that saved me. After that I went back to a tobacco from Tinder Box that was called Scottish Moor and probably was Lane 1-Q. I loved it and smoked it for years until I could not get it anymore not realizing it was 1-Q until years later. I since tried all kinds of tobacco but like the aromatics the best. Summary: start where you like and you will have a great time smoking and meeting wonderful people in this hobby.

    Hey guys…from the UK :-)
Good to see you helping new pipe smokers and mentioning our Gawith Hoggarth firm.
Just a quick correction…Twists and Ropes are not ‘avant garde’! They’re straight out of the 18th Century!!
I’ve been smoking a pipe for 60 years or more, my father and grandfather before me. It’s so good to see you cheering on a new generation…so keep up the good work :-)
All good wishes
Tony

Nice little video! If I was going to recommend 5 bulk aromatics for new pipe smokers that are easy to pull flavor from and not overly fussy about burn mechanics I think I'd go with Sutliff Vanilla Custard, Gawith Hoggarth Bob's Chocolate Flake, Lane TK-6 (which as far as I can tell is pretty much just Cult Blood Red Moon with the chocolate and vanilla toned down for more focus on the cherry), Peter Stokkebye Peaches & Creme, and C&D Autumn Evening. A good variety of styles and flavors that should all be easy to pick out, and I'd toss in a bonus recommendation for Lane Black Raspberry if they're a raspberry fan.

Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic is severely underrated, and maybe the only aromatic I would recommend to a beginner.

My very 1st blend… “Wilshire” from Tinderbox. It was lane 1Q and that’s what started me on my journey almost 23 years ago. While Im not into aros that much anymore… autumn evening is still one i keep around. Very nice blend! Cheers guys!
