The Reddit user who claims that a single bait is the optimal strategy on most Pokémon in the great marsh is verifiably incorrect.

Bait increases a Pokémon’s chance to flee while also increasing its catch rate by one stage.

Bidoof has a catch rate of 255, a 50.29% chance to catch.
At a +1 stage this becomes 78.47%

However, bidoof’s base flee rate is 35.69%

The odds of successfully catching bidoof with balls alone is 73.92%

Wasting a turn makes the maximum chance of success no greater than 74.31%. Since the baited ball does not have a catch rate greater than 90%, we can say definitively that balls alone is superior

You can find my analysis by searching “Professor Rex Great Marsh”

The conclusion of six bait on whiscash is correct but all other analysis is wrong.

I think Johto's Bug-Catching Contest is worth mentioning as a more accessible alternative to the Safari Zone.
It's the only way to catch Scyther, Pinsir, and the otherwise version-exclusive lines of Butterfree and Beedrill, it's before the third gym and it's free.
I kinda like that it's a contest, making it more replayable, because there are tangible rewards you won't get most of the time (we all know the real reward is the Scyther and Pinsir but yeah).
Gold and Silver's RTC allows for the real life 20-minute limit that makes more sense than the security stalking every 500 steps you take...
The fact that it only takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays prevents it from becoming a grind fest. There's less incentive to save scum, since you do get an item reward, a pokemon, as well as potentially some exp. The Sun Stone is nice, but it's not worth doing 20 minutes over and over.

I don’t really care for the game itself, but I do really like the in-universe idea of a Pokémon nature preserve, where rare Pokémon can be found.

I love videos like this. It really makes the community feel more alive. It gives attention to great games that are very old but still have interesting player bases.

The Kanto Safari Zone has always been my favourite from concept - just a weird little place where some of the rarest Pokemon in the game reside. It kind of ends there, because I'd totally want a Scyther/Pinsir/Tauros/Chansey for my team, but it's likely never happening. That said it felt great nabbing a Lv. 15 Dragonair in Yellow - years later I saved/used that thing in Pokemon Stadium's Pika Cup and with the Dragon Rage TM it destroyed darn near EVERYTHING.

I also love what they did with it in the banned Dratini episode - 30 years before the episode's events, trainers heard of a Dratini in the park and not only ravaged the place, but caught excessive amounts of other Pokemon, which is why they put the 30 Safari Ball restriction in place.

10:17 Also, rowing throcks. I've been there, no worries haha
