  It’s interesting to remember that Yarrick is the exception, most commissars never will go to the lengths he went to for his men. But as you said still made complex decisions that he thought would lead to victory, even if so many lives would be lost innocent or otherwise. He’s a living legend to mankind to inspire and fight despite the odd, and the ultimate symbol of the Orks and what they love most, a good scrap.

  Out of Universe Yarrick has two other aspects worth mentioning:<br>1) In older lore he was very reluctant to execute guardsmen. Lore-wise he famously didn’t execute a single soldier in the defensive of Hades during the first Ork invasion and didn’t have the same execution-for-leadership-test rules that other Commissars did on his profile back in earlier editions. This has since been retconned presumably to make him fit into the stereotypical “Commissar Character” role that’d otherwise be missing from actual gameplay.<br>2) “Old ‘Bale’ Eye” didn’t initially have that middle name, instead it was “one” rather than “bale”. I still own copies of the 4th Editions Ork and Tyranid Codexes, and having a two characters nicknamed “Old One Eye” was a frequent point of confusion and trivia depending on how well you knew the lore at the time. Sadly the Tyranid Old One Eye has been reabsorbed into the Hive Fleets and his homonymous Human has been rechristened with “bale” as the differentiator. Long gone are the days when Ghazghull was frequently thwarted by a constantly regenerating Carnifex in a peaked-cap.

  The story of the second war for Armageddon, especially the rivalry between Ghazghkull and Yarrick, is the thing that got me into 40K as a whole after DoW got me interested. Love this old curmudgeon.
