For the most part UP's double diesel era was very successful. The DD35, DD40 and U50 had successful careers while the U50C and C855 had the shortest life of any UP diesel.

I did a tour of duty on USS BARBOUR COUNTY (LST-1195). The BC was powered by six Alco V-16s, three on each shaft. I'm not sure if all of the Newport class were Alco-powered. I was the Ops Officer on the BC, not the engineer officer, but to my knowledge, the engines had few problems.

The pictore at 2:29 that says it's an Alco 251C is actually an English Electric 16CSVT probably out of a British Rail class 50 (also built by EE)

Some of the most interesting programs . I find that three eras of railroads of the American 440 of the V and T , the U P 4664 and 4884 , and finally the ATSF F 7 War Bonnets as the most beautiful engines ever .

What are you on? The sand boxes are mounted outside of the walkways, every single picture shows that, there's plenty of space to walk

I love the twin engine monsters! In real life, they had their issues and I appreciate learning what they were. Love the rugged look.

But, on my HO empire, they would be pulled out of ‘storage’, sold to Amtrak and updated to pull ‘new AutoTrain service from Chicago to Florida…Phase V paint scheme!😉

Great video! Had a question, did you have a Fairbanks-Morse video that you took down? Could have sworn I watched it. Thanks!

I believe modern diesel locomotives set up for narrow gauge operation in places like south America have four trucks and use spanner bolsters.

Yes, it was a heavy job to walk through the pressurized body on the loco. They finally turned to deep sea diving techniques, and the fireman and engineer would have to put on a specially built pressurized suit, much like what the astro-nots wear. The suits were made from fiberglass, carbon, and window screen, all self contained with an air tank and a small porta potty. The suits were also equipped with a safety harness in case the person wearing it fell into the 200 tons of sand the loco carried. 🙄
