This is the rare villain who truly understands how screwed he is. Reminds me of Dead Zone abridged “Oh my god you morons stole Goku’s kid?!!!!

Four reasons the "being hit by the car" bit is easily explainable:<br><br>1. He was rather pissed. <br>2. He was too busy focusing on targets.<br>3. Guns are loud. <br>4. His peripheral vision was obscured by an SUV.

Just having another son, and raising the new one better, having learned so much from your failures with the first one, seems like a far easier task than surviving this whole ordeal.

On thing I loved about John is that he wasn't just out to kill Iospeh. He was out to punish him. He could have perched up on a roof near the club and waited for the guy to come out. He would have had to come out sooner or later. We even see later that John is quite proficient at exactly that. Instead, he went into the club to handle it up close. He had a clean shot while in the club with Ioseph looking right at him. Instead, he takes out the guy under him and lets Ioseph have some more time to run. Fast forward to the safehouse raid, he had an clear line to the room Ioseph was in and used it for someone else in the room. One of the friends, not even a guard that would have posed a threat. Then, after what sounds like a massive firefight, John lets Ioseph get close enough to the escape cars to think he actually has a chance of escape before detonating them and ripping that hope away. Followed up buy the super intimidating slow walk. Everything John did was perfectly tailored to instill terror in his target before the end.

Honestly on rewatches, the whole movie it feels like everyone (including John himself) are more pissed because the son didn't kill him. Like after 5 years of being off the grid, John was relatively rusty and at times out right lost fights once he started on his revenge quest, leading me to headcanon that John is lowkey suicidal. Ultimately to me it felt like John while rightfully angry about his dog is more pissed at the unprofessionalism of the mob and assassins since his retirement/unretirement

Its worth noting, not only did they kill his dog and steal his car, but they specifically did it after his wife died.<br>Like maybe if his wife was still alive, he could have forgiven and forgotten, but the son just had to go and kick a man who was already down and take what little he had left. And that's what did them in.

Well, he didn't really let John leave. He gave him an 'impossible task' - fully expecting John to die...and when John succeeded (with Santino D'Antonio's help) he had no choice but to let him actually leave. <br><br>But what I like about the scenes with Viggo: Every time you see him (in non-action scenes) he takes increasingly hard drugs to cope. It's an elegant cinematic way to underscore how his mental state breaks down as the situation goes from bad to worse for him.

"He's not the boogeyman. He's who you call up to KILL the boogeyman"<br><br>That's so f**king hard and still gives me goosebumps. Really set up the whole film.

I love how John is at his most vulnerable during the first movie. He is at the worst of his grieve, hasn't kill in years, is still unshure if he should be doing this and got thrashed out of nowhere last night. This was the moment to take him out... and every little oportunity they had is wasted. By the time the second movie comes, he is already at his prime again, ready to burn an entire underground empire to the ground.
