The Dutch Royal family resided in Ottawa Ontario during the war. Princess Margriet was born in Canada.

Nadia, Canada has a Dutch diaspora of about 1.1 million people. Canada always has and always will stand with Netherlands. In my life I have known many Dutch Canadians and they have made a very large and important contribution in building Canada. What our forefathers did to help liberate the Netherlands was the right thing to do and I don’t believe that Canada as a whole has ever regretted the sacrifice. We love the Dutch people, those in the Netherlands AND those who live among us in Canada. In times of war and in times of upheaval, Europe and Canada are always side by side. You seemed very emotional during this video, Nadia. You are gracious. ❤🇨🇦

Canadian here. My grandfather served in WWII and he never talked about it, except for his love of the Netherlands. He was gifted a pair of wooden shoes and would always take them out when I visited him. He built a fountain in his backyard and dedicated it to Holland. The love he had for the Netherlands was passed down through our family. Sending love from Canada - I really hope to be able to visit one day.

As a Canadian, I have to say it's wonderful to be a part of a country determined to do the right thing throughout history.

I served in Canadian Military for 20 years. I was lucky enough to serve on a tour with the Dutch military. We are so similar in our beliefs. I have absolute admiration for the Dutch. Love from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️

Canadian here. I've done a lot of personal research on that time period. Yes, Canada did a lot to help the Netherlands back then. But I've learned the Dutch people have done a lot since then. (1) The Netherlands made May 5 one of their national holidays called "Liberation Day" to not only celebrate their liberation but also to honor the Canadians that helped them. (2) Sometimes you have concert festivals that do that as well. (3) Dutch families adopted the graves of the Canadian Fallen and STILL continue to care for those graves. And (4 - this always makes me feel like crying) On Christmas Eve every year Dutch children go into the cemetaries of the Canadian Fallen and place lit candles on their graves. So yes, the Dutch people are grateful....but Canada is also very grateful that the Netherlands have continued to show respect and honor to those of us that fell for them....even after all these years. We will ALWAYS be friends with the Dutch. Thanks.

One of the REASONS that we teach History is so that children will learn what went before....and to NOT REPEAT IT. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”...is an old saying.

Canadian vet here: My first visit to the Netherlands was in 1952 as a young man in the Royal Canadian Navy. I could not believe the reception I received at that time, which was only 7 years after the war. I was 18 years old. I was in uniform and had the word "Canada" sewn on the shoulders of my jacket. People would stop me while walking down the street and invite me to their home for a meal. And I would find out they had billeted 2 or 3 Canadian soldiers who had taken part in the liberation of Amsterdam. The local pubs were the same. I never paid for a drink my whole time in Holland. It was quite humbling.
I also have a favourite uncle buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetary near Nijmegen, which I visited as well. At that time the graves were marked by white wooden crosses and later changed to stone markers. It was overwhelming to see thousands of white crosses row upon row to the horizon.
Thank you Nadia for putting this video on YouTube. And thank you for your kind words. Canadians will NEVER forget the Dutch and in these difficult times with the USA in 2025, we will always have your back. Bless you.
