  Del Toro also has such a clear and distinct sense of pain. There's no hero getting shot and then heroically continuing on, pain is visceral and terrifying.

  As a therapist who treats people who do a lot of 'villainous' things, the point about them being miserable is apt. I've treated a lot of violent offenders, and none of them were happy. Often when they had significant physical/emotional dominance over a person was when they felt weak themselves.
