You missed one important fact. A large number of those loyal customers didn't leave JC Penney, they passed away.

As a child, I couldn't wait to peruse both the Sears and JC Penney catalogs around Christmas. It was a rite of passage in the 70s and 80s.

Ron Johnson is a CLASSIC example of NOT having a clue. No one mentions how the Apple Stores almost immediately needed a HUGE rebuild to clean up the terrible traffic and workflow issues he created. Notice the cash register lines vanished?

I started shopping there again actually. They've got incredible deals. I have found the most amazing purses and men's clothing for my husband. The salon in there has a variety of products. I think they've actually become more affordable than people think right now.

My mom worked for JCP for 23 years beginning in the 1960's. I grew up in JCP clothes. Several years after she had retired I was living in Plano TX and I had a friend who worked as a catalog layout designer at the corporate HQ. She was able to give us a tour of the building and have lunch in the corporate cafeteria. It was such a treat for my mom.

In the late 90s, I remember our capstone business analysis class doing a case study on the success of JCPenney. Little did we know that the decline had already begun. In business, it doesn’t take long to nuke yourself.

So sad. I’m 77. JCP was where my Mom bought all my Cub & Boy Scout uniforms. JCP was where my Mom bought all my sister and my back to school clothes. In HS it’s where I bought all my underwear and gym clothes. It’s amazing how a “go to place” can just go away. Anyways. As always. OUTSTANDING!

When I was growing up, the four BIG stores we went to were Sears, Montgomery Ward, K-Mart and JC Penney. Three of them are gone and the last is on life support.

As a former employee working as a corporate photographer from 2010 until 2020, this is spot on. I was laid off due to COVID. Ron Johnson almost put is under in 18 months and made over 50 million dollars by the time he was forced out. His ideas were way too drastic and too fast for JCP customers. Getting rid of coupons was the worst idea, JCP customers actually loved the game of finding a deal.

I still shop at JC Penny. I buy clothes and Christmas presents there.
