I thought the purpose of Roomba was to make internet videos of cats riding around on them. 🙂

We purchased a Roomba in 2022 and it's fascinating to use. Through the app, you tell it which room to vacuum and then take bets on which way it's going to go while never getting close to the room you had selected.

When we moved into our new house in August 2020, my wife swore that the floors would look Spic and Span (for those Gen Xers like me out there), if we ever got a Roomba to get after our floors like an Indonesian Nike sweat shop.

• Months 0-6: Our floors looked pretty good, but it would occasionally make odd choices.

• Months 7-12: Roomba started acting like Forrest Gump when he was first deployed in Vietnam. It had a general idea what it was doing there, but his superiors knew something wasn’t right about him.

• Months 13-18: Roomba started acting like Jenny…wandering the world looking for purpose, but frequently ending up in the wrong places.

Month 19: Roomba was like post war Lt Dan - completely disillusioned and acting purposeless, often finding its way into random bottles of whiskey.

• Month 20: “Roomba died on a Saturday”

Roomba was truly like a box of chocolates….you never did know what you were gonna get.

When I looked into buying a robot vacuum I looked at the robots on the market. I saw that Roomba vacuums use cameras to position themselves, identify objects etc. Most other vacuums use lidar technology. There is no way I was willing to pay to have cameras rolling around inside my home. Every product that says they can’t be hacked, eventually gets hacked. While no one would be terribly interested in my home, it just is creepy to have robotized cameras rolling around my home. I hated to buy from a Chinese competitor, but who makes Roombas? The Chinese of course!

I had Roombas, more than one over the years, and liked them. However, my wife and I eventually went back to vacuum cleaners, Dyson in particular, rather than any of their other robotic vacuum competitors. I'm not totally sure why, but part of it was that there was extra labor in cleaning hair, etc. out of the robot, which was less of a problem with Dysons, so the robotic aspect saved labor for the actual cleaning but most of the advantage seemed to be undone by the labor of cleaning the vacuum.

I have an older roomba and I love it. It just bumps around the room and does an excellent job with dog hair.

I had a Roomba in 2021, and it only lasted a year before glitching out, and saying there was an error constantly. It could be a warranty fix, but there was no customer support in Canada, so that turned me off from ever owning another.
Now, I have a Chinese knock-off from Amazon, and it works decently well, aside from getting stuck between my bar stools.
And before anyone comments on "laziness", I work shifts and live alone, so anything that frees up time and handles a daily chore is a huge help. I still do a proper sweep before mopping though.

These are such excellent videos, there’s no showmanship there’s no show boating, it’s just well researched facts and straight talk from start to finish. I should’ve subscribed sooner.
