I think FMAB's explicit thesis is that deliberately choosing to go on and have hope is the only solution to a horrible reality. Choosing to strive and grit and fight for better in the face of horrors and tragedy is the only way forward. I find it very inspiring.

Preach it to the choir, my man! Even all these years later, FMAB remains a true gem precisely because of how it portrays its darker subject matter: with real respect and care, as well as with an understanding that it is NOT all-consuming.

This is soo good, FMAB has been one of my favorite shows for years but I’ve never been able to put in to words what it truly means. How the plot is based on all of this horror and yet it’s a show of hope. You said it perfectly.

It does have the twists, and it is peak fiction. Peak fiction is not reserved solely for dark stories. It's just the best of fiction of any genre and theme

You hit the nail on the head with this one, FMAB optimism is what makes this show stand aside from others like AOT (a show I also love for the themes it dissects), and the reason why I consider it the best anime ever made.

Well, guess it's time I watch it again now

This is exactly why I find the arguments around "which FMA is better" tiring. The answer is neither. They are both fundamentally different stories disguised as each other. Sure, they have the same characters, same back stories, same premise, but each version varies widely not just in progression, but by their very nature.

A simple example of the differences is in the reactions to the central library being burnt down. In 2003, the Elrics had to struggle with yet another dead lead while fmab had them carry on and find Sheska within a minute of screen time after the realization Marcoh's research was gone.

One is a story of struggle through a quagmire where the world isn't fair, the other is a story of hope and reaching out to help one another. Which story you prefer is purely based on personal preference.

Great analysis by the way. Loved the video!

What you're describing fits well with the concept of Alchemy in the Manga/Anime.

Alchemy is understanding of how to break down matter and putting it together into another form.

The plot shows us how people get broken down to their lowest forms only to bring them up together in the end.

The result isn't always what the characters wanted, but the outcome is always something what they needed.

Even when faced with insurmountable adversaries, if one can overcome it, their heart will be made Fullmetal.

The best moment of symbolism in the whole series has to be Scar using reconstruction in his fight with Bradley. For a character whose arc for the first half of the story was about destruction, revenge and tearing down those who had wronged him, and his power set reflected as much, but in the final arc thanks to his commitment to restorative justice as opposed to vengeance accepts the power he'd long spurned. And in so doing, he saves the world.
