Pretty well thought out kit. If you are mostly dealing with urban environments, as you say in the video, I would consider adding a sillcock key to your gear. Much easier to get water from a commercial building than trying to find a stream or such in an urban environment (especially in the desert). Yes, you are stealing, but then you are carrying lock picks, which I assume are not for a Boy Scout jamboree lock picking contest.

I think you really have hit on a great point about mobility. Most people won’t be able to walk 5 miles with a 20 lb pack. Whatever is the gear you are trying to “bug out “ with I recommend going on a long walk with on your back and re-evaluate.

Agree binocs are frequently overlooked. Here in the West our spaces are much more open and distances can be vast - good to be able to look around - maybe for water. An advantage in an urban environment as well. Your kit is well put together - beyond a survival or a 'bushcraft' kit. As you stated - too many lose focus on what this kit needs to be capable of and what it doesn't need to be. Great video! :face-green-smiling:

I only have a 'Go Bag'. The most likely situation I would have to leave the house in a hurry is fire. My Go Bag also comes with me when I leave town. It's pretty small and maybe 5 kilogram. I live in a city so me having to sleep in nature is not likely.

You could create SO much more space if you combined all those small pouches and into a few slightly larger pouches or ripstop bags. Those canvas pouches are bulky just in and ofthemselves.

Very nice video and some good advice, as usual.

My ‘get home’ bag stays in my jeep. It’s very similar to yours. Binoculars are essential imho. I have the Snugpack Jungle Bag but it’s paired with an SOL Escape Bivy instead of the wool blanket. Military poncho for shelter just in case.
I also carry hot drink mixes (apple cider, etc) for winter travel.

I drive 14.5 miles to work, but it’s only 8 miles as the crow flies. So it shouldn’t take me that long to get home.
I only have one property owner that I haven’t been able to talk to about crossing his property. I have permission from all the rest. Something to think about when you are planning a way home is who owns the property between you and your destination.

I actually have enough food, water, and gear in the jeep to outfit two other people for 72 hours if it came down to it.
I keep the bag ready in case I don’t have time to be selective with what I take. It weighs 21 pounds, plus another 4 to 6 pounds if I take extra water.

All of those items can only be accessed when you stop and take off the backpack. That means you stop. Time lost, exposure, vulnerability

I'd dump half that stuff

That’s a great bag set up. I was very impressed with the fact that you had a full shelter kit that isn’t just a sol bivvy and some trash bags. Did you ever consider the swagman roll? That works in conjunction with your Helikon Tex poncho for shelter instead of the snug pak bivvy blanket? It probably doesn’t matter but I was thinking about how it is meant to work with the poncho you already own and thought it might complement the over all versatility of the shelter system.
