my favourite crochet designers & patterns (because crochet is NOT ugly)

i think people are so used to seeing crochet being done with a DK or higher weight, and seeing very defined crochet stitches with obvious gapping, or very dense and stiff, that they assume all crochet looks like this. crochet is an incredibly complex art that yes, can look ugly if done with little care or a bad pattern, but also has the ability to be very delicate, intricate, and beautiful

other commenters have made great points but it's also worth noting that people are much more used to looking at knit fabrics because they can be industrially made, so we always associate "polished" and "professional looking" finishes with knitting. But if you look at vintage crochet patterns they were almost always made with thinner yarns which fight back on the stiffness and thickness of the crochet stitches a lot, thus making pieces much more wearable and uniform looking, with better looking finishes as well. Nowadays however almost nobody wants a project that takes forever, especially in the crochet community, there is much less tolerance to a project taking months, something knitters are very used to.

If i could add two points: American crochet has its own style and history, but as a Mexican myself, we have our own crochet style that is beautiful beaded lace work! So many variations based on state, city & village. And this is true for all crochet. Brazilians, Irish, Vietnamese crochet is LUSH and gorgeous too!! There seems to be a major lack of cultural nuisance and understanding to crochet in America which undermines the art as a whole, there are even really odd sentiments like “not your grandma’s crochet!” But mid century crochet work was amongst the most beautiful & intricate, evolving the craft as a whole in the states.

My other points: people not understanding textiles, draping, sizing, garment construction or measurements. That comes with time & practice but most people in the States view crochet as a “hobby”, not an evolving, varied art form.

the people who say crochet projects are ugly have the same problem as the people who say knitting patterns are boring; they just don't know where to look...

I started out as a crocheter and once I switched to knitting it's hard to go back, not only because of the look and drape of the fabric but also because of the crazy amount of yarn crochet requires. If you can achieve a similar look in knitting I will always choose knitting. Anyway I liked the video, it's interesting to see designers I didn't know. Thanks!!

I think it’s awesome you spoke on this. 🙌🏾
Some in the knitting community can be so casually elitists about so many aspects of fiber art. To just crap on other art forms like that is wild; especially another fiber art. Not to be dramatic, but people‘s personal style is so much a part of their identity and to call crochet creators and fans creations ugly because it’s not something that you prefer is hella Mean Girl.

Some of these patterns you showed are sooo good! Thanks for sharing!

I've been crocheting for 20 years and (obviously) don't find crochet to be ugly. I think crocheted items are beautiful and varied, just like knitted items are. It's a different craft from knitting. And I love the things you've shown in your videos that you've crocheted or knitted! You are so talented. Thank you for sharing.

Crochet is funkier! Some people might are just influenced by the return of minimalist fashion trend 😅

love that you made this video as a response! Crochet is definitely its own craft - a lot of crocheters focus on being crafty and innovative rather than thinking about the garments from a fashion perspective - drape, fiber content, shaping etc. Just because crocheters tend to be craftier on average than knitters doesn't mean the craft is ugly. 99% of peoples issues with crochet being "ugly" could be resolved by looking at crochet garments that use thinner yarn lol. Love urthbymorg, aura fibers and am making the Katie Joslin Crochet cardi this fall with a friend! I do really love to knit & respect it a lot as a very ancient, very complex craft, but people seriously need to put some respect on Crochet's name

I've been crocheting for more than 10 years but I've only recently started paying attention to the designers and finding ones that I like. It really becomes like a rabit hole finding new designers
