  Spot on of Jonathan and Simon to bring up that 9-mile &quot;waist.&quot; People really struggle to grasp just how tiny that is until you look at the map—almost the entire population lives crammed into that narrow coastal strip.<br><br>If Simon’s history of the Middle East since 1900 teaches us anything, it’s that this region doesn&apos;t forgive a lack of strategic depth. Just look at October 7th. Hamas didn&apos;t just cross a fence; their motorized cells pushed 14 to 18 miles deep into Israeli territory, reaching all the way to Ofakim. Think about that: their penetration on Oct 7 was literally double the entire width of Israel’s narrowest point.<br><br>Now look at the bigger picture ahead—an aggressive Iranian proxy ring, a shifting Sunni axis, and Turkey flexing its muscles. If a militia out of Gaza could drive almost 20 miles inland in a matter of hours, how on earth is Israel supposed to pull back from the high ground of Judea &amp; Samaria or hand over the Jordan Valley? Across the entire Middle East, borders are defined by strength and geography—and for Israel, trading away strategic depth isn&apos;t an option when survival is on the line.

  He said that an organic realignment would have been better, than a group of people drawing lines on a map. Organic in this instance, would have meant wars, et-nic clea-sing, real gen-cides ( like the Armenian, Greek and Assyrinian at the beginning of the 20th century, Rwanda in the 1994) etc. I&apos;m not saying drawing a line was any good, but to me it would be very difficult to predict whether the organic choice would have been any better.

  I am from India and I am reading his book &quot;STALIN&quot;. Very detailed, well researched with sources and no personal opinions or biases but simple observations stopping sooner before they could express his bias, that is if he has any. Good writer. Thank you Mr. Montefiore !
