6:35 Akshually! Polar bears DID evolve alongside a sort of "penguin": the Great Auk.
Different family of birds, but they filled the same niche as a flightless, fish-eating, rock-nesting, polar inhabiting marine bird. They even had the same black and white coloring and, in fact, they were the original creature the term "penguin" referred to, with all other Antarctic penguins being named after them. The Great Auk existed in a small but stable population around the UK, Iceland, and Greenland and the like until they were hunted to extinction by humans in the 1800s. So it's fairly easy to gloss over and forget about "Northern penguins" due to the fact that they're all dead.
So while modern polar bears have never encountered any sort of penguin, their species has hunted creatures of this sort before. The more you know.

"Unlike some predators that reproduce rapidly to offset losses."
And that's why domestic/feral dogs are currently the most common and dominant carnivorous mammals in every single place on Earth.

I have great ideas for you:

- Could penguins 🐧 (any of the living genera of penguins of your choice) survive the Mesozoic? I can imagine 1 species becoming a tall, gigantic, terrestrial ambush predator with a very long neck that hunts smaller dinosaurs, mammals and other animals. I imagine another species becoming something akin to Anthropornis but with a larger sharper beak to hunt all the large Mesozoic fish

- Could mandrills and drills survive the Mesozoic? I can imagine 1 species becoming carnivorous due to the abundance of prey

- Could Zhuchengtyrannus survive modern Southeast Asia?

- Could Utahraptor survive the Cenozoic (any place you can think of)?

- Could Shantungosaurus survive the Cenozoic (any place you can think of)?

- Could Nanotyrannus survive the Cenozoic (any place you can think of)?

- Could Shri survive the Cenozoic (any place you can think of)?

- Could pygmy hippos survive the Mesozoic? Vividen thought of 2 species becoming carnivorous, but I wanna see you create 3 herbivorous spec evo species that remained herbivorous and adapted to the Mesozoic flora

- Could African wild dogs survive the Mesozoic?

- Could ghost bats survive the Mesozoic? They already prey on large vertebrates so they’ll make for excellent aerial mammalian predators of dinosaurs and pterosaurs

- Could cassowaries survive the Mesozoic?

- Could wild chickens (junglefowl) and wild turkeys survive the Mesozoic? I can already think of 1 species of junglefowl and turkey that became much larger and stronger to prey on small dinosaurs, mammals and other animals sort of like terror birds

- Could cockatoos survive the Mesozoic?

- Could Sumatran rhinos survive the Mesozoic?

- Could wild sheep (Ovis) and wild goats (Capra, ibexes and turs) survive the Mesozoic? I can think of 1 species that grew large and developed huge horns or even 4 big horns to better fight against dinosaurs

- Could Carnotaurus survive the Cenozoic? I can imagine 1 species developing huge horns for both fighting for mating rights and shoving large mammals from the side, so both genders will have these horns. I also imagine another species that lives in a cold snowy place, so it would develop a woolly coat of feathers so now we have feathered Carnotaurus!

- Could Hatzegopteryx survive the Cenozoic?

- Could pandas 🐼 survive the Mesozoic? I can imagine 1 species returning back to carnivory and becoming a huge carnivorous bear. And another species that remained herbivorous but also grew huge for better protection, they no longer eat bamboo and have adapted to eating and digesting the Mesozoic flora

- Could Livyatan survive the Mesozoic?

- Could Nanaimoteuthis haggarti survive the Cenozoic? Humans now get to coexist with real life Krakens

- Could Perucetus survive the Mesozoic?

That Bear-Otter is pretty much an arctic Enhydriodon (giant prehistoric land otter) equivalent!

I'd say your 'sea bear/panda' would be more likely to be an omnivore than a full herbivore.

I’m genuinely surprised. These bears did better than I expected. And the speculative species are beyond anything I could’ve imagined.

Polar Bears need only ice. Everything else, they can weather, it seems.

Awesome speculative biology episode!
