Project FD2: How a Single Research Aircraft Rewrote Aviation Physics | Rare Restored Footage

In the early post-war era, aeronautical science faced an invisible, violent barrier: the behavior of aircraft crossing the sound barrier. While wartime pioneers had validated turbojet propulsion through Frank Whittle’s early turbine designs and the Gloster Meteor, the physics of sustained supersonic flight remained perilous. Long before Concorde carried passengers across the North Atlantic, a slender British research plane took flight to probe the transonic boundary. Developed by the Fairey Aviation Company under chief engineer Charles Chaplin, the Fairey Delta 2 was conceived as a pure aerodynamic testbed. Driven by a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet producing over 10,000 pounds of thrust, the aircraft incorporated radical sixty-degree delta wings and a pioneering ten-degree drooping nose to give its pilot a view of the tarmac during landing. At the controls was former Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aviator Peter Twiss. His carrier flying experience proved indispensable on November 17, 1954, when an air-pressure blockage severed the fuel line at 30,000 feet, starving the Avon engine of fuel. Twiss executed an unpowered forced deadstick landing at Boscombe Down, touching down at 200 knots on only the nosewheel and skidding the fuselage down the runway without fatal damage. Once rebuilt, the FD2 routinely exceeded the speed of sound without using afterburner. In early 1956, Fairey set its sights on the official FAI World Air Speed Record, then held by an American F-100 Super Sabre at 822 mph. Facing official skepticism from the Ministry of Supply, which charged Fairey for facility use, the team established a precision optical tracking grid over southern England. On March 10, 1956, flying at 38,000 feet, Twiss sliced through the timed run, recording an astonishing 1,132 miles per hour—raising the record by an unprecedented 310 mph. The achievement electrified the 1956 Farnborough Airshow. Testing later expanded to Cazaux, France, directly informing Dassault’s work on the Mirage III. Modified into the BAC 221 with an ogival wing, this historic airframe finalized the flight parameters that brought Concorde to life.
