  When Driscoll made that statement following the firing of Petrie, his entire congregation should have walked out. It showed he was more like a cult leader than a pastor. He still is.

  I do NOT believe that an abusive pastor should be kept in his position just because he’s a good speaker. If they lack temperance, kindness, self-control, gentleness, peaceable and all the other characteristics mentioned in I Tim 3:1-7 or Titus 1:5-9, they should be disqualified and not allowed in the pulpit at all! Just being a good speaker is not enough! <br><br>And just because a lot of people come to the altar to accept Christ. That is NOT a good reason to keep them either! They will set an EVIL example for their Acolytes and Elders to be abusive and coercive just like them! “Twice as much a son of hell” as himself (Matt. 23:15)! These are the people Jesus was talking about in Matt. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEC0BCFwtdY&amp;t=442">7:22</a>! When they go into the Judgment they’ll be saying “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and done many wonderful works?” <br><br>Many of these pastors are NOT teaching from the Bible, expounding on and discussing Scripture. They are speaking extemporaneously, cherry picking Scripture to support topics and opinions. A NARCISSIST is NOT getting people to focus on Jesus and the Bible, nor teaching people how to exegete Scripture. People are set adrift by many “adept speakers”! We’ve been indoctrinated to protect the leader, but NOT the people he is abusing. We are creating the perfect environment for CULTS to thrive.<br><br>I accepted Christ into my life in Spring 1990 in a church with an authoritarian, spiritually and sexually abusive pastor who was a very good speaker and many came to the altar to accept Christ, but he left in his wake many more DAMAGED souls! Some left Christianity, some committed suicide, some (like me) were set adrift for years because we did not have a good foundation in the Bible. And the Elders and ministers enabled him because they weren’t strong enough to correct him and stop the abuse. In my opinion, the Elders and ministers were NOT qualified either. By the way, that pastor is in prison for life for sexually abusing boys and teens over a 50 yr period! And some of his acolytes are now preaching! I hear they are carrying on his ways!

  Men who are bullies often end up controlling church boards either directly, as a chairman or member, or indirectly by influencing the board behind the scenes. <br>It has been sad and disappointing to watch this happen again and again over decades in different churches. <br>Thank you for this conversation.

  Excellent conversation! &nbsp;Thanks for sharing. Mark Driscoll is dangerous to the body of christ and is still unfluencing many who are blind to his abuses sadly.

  I was familiar with a group of &quot;Elders&quot; that were picked because they were not old and also that they were easy to manipulate. &nbsp;The younger &quot;Elders&quot; were most likely under the delusion, as were the congregation, that decisions were being made by a group of &quot;Elders&quot;. The fact was that a small group of senior leaders made all decisions. Corrupt to the core, as were the senior leaders.

  Calvary Chapels are often similar. Pastor stacks the board with yes men and then many pastors rule over the flock and impose their will.
