As someone who has been the same weight give or take 5 lbs my whole life, I’m 63 now, I gained 15 pounds over one year. And the only thing I had done differently was that I was drinking more than I ever had due to a job in the music industry, the people I was hanging with and a boyfriend who liked to drink. When I went for my yearly check up, I couldn’t believe I’d gained that much. (I know it’s not a lot but my dad had a massive heart attack at 50, so I was always conscious about that). The doctor didn’t say a word about the gain. Exactly a year later, I had lost those pounds by just cutting out the alcohol except on special occasions. The doctor all of a sudden was concerned about the weight loss. I had only gone back to my regular weight. It was the oddest thing. He had no concern for the gain, but was concerned about the loss. He wanted me to take all kinds of blood tests. I refused cause I knew why. The other issue with alcohol is that it’s harder to burn those calories when you’re over a certain age. Especially for women in pre and post menopause.

I don't watch much TV or movies anymore, actually it was when i saw the "to be continued" at the end of "My Name is Earl" that i stopped watching new shows entirely. I hadn't seen you since then.... wow bro, you did the work!!! You look great, and you clearly have a great understanding of the human psychology it takes to master yourself. Subscribing and i look forward to seeing more of your vids in the future. Good positive content!

I just found this site and platform and am really enthused that I did. Ethan's journey has been very inspiring to me. I have wrestled with my weight my entire, going from being chubby in my childhood to being super thin during my college years to becoming so obese in my middle age that I required bariatric surgery. At 63 now, I realize that I have spent a good portion of my life trying to find a philosophy of exercise, nutrition and lifestyle that can keep me at a weight and level of fitness that allows me to enjoy the fullest quality of life that I can manage while simultaneously being realistic about what I can and should doing at this stage of my life as opposed to what I could do in my 20's and 30's.

So thank you for this undertaking. I am looking forward to using the information and disscussions here to assist me in forming a more holisitic and authentic philosophy of living for myself. 💪✌️

Alcohol works the way it does because it’s a mild poison that is disrupting various systems in your body. And the energy your body uses to process it out of your system leads to inflammation in the short run, and some level of damage long run. If you’re not one of the lucky humans who has fabulous metabolism, and the ability to process alcohol super efficiently, the body compensates for that damage in various ways. For a lot of us the body considers alcohol just one of the many stressors (including bad sleep, emotional stress, working or “playing” super long hours), and protects you by packing on weight.

I’m far from someone who has cracked the code, but since I have a lot of health issues, and survival stress from the shitty period we’re living through, I decided a long time ago that I didn’t need to add another multiplier in the form of alcohol to make my health even worse. The risk/reward just isn’t a good ratio for me. Plus, my shitty health really gave me pretty immediate feedback of feeling way worse with even a little alcohol the day before, which made it an easy choice.

That’s not me passing any judgement or moralizing. Honestly, I’m jealous of people who don’t have to consider the brutal health consequences of every little thing. It’s just what I’ve discovered about my own body’s function.

I wanted to comment on Anna's section of the video where you addressed the topic of drinking during dieting and losing weight. I'll start by saying that I'm a 5' 11", 47 year old man and am working on losing weight right now. I stopped drinking cold turkey on June 15th of this year (2026 for those reading this in the future. Today is August 20th as a point of reference). I was drinking hard liquor nearly every night. I started drinking initially to self-medicate to combat feelings of anxiety (I do not recommend this at all, by the way!). Even after the symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks, etc. dissipated, I kept drinking because being buzzed just felt good to me. The hangovers and brain fog? Not so much.

I noticed that my body was retaining water quite a bit. Edema in the feet and ankles. I would say that within a week or so after quitting alcohol? The swelling reduced DRAMATICALLY! I'm telling you, I used to wear compression socks all the time and even got special plantar fasciitis socks for my feet to help reduce swelling in my feet since compression socks only usually help around the top of the ankles, calves, etc. This helped, but was only a band aid. As of typing this, I no longer wear compression socks. It was so bad that I couldn't wear regular sneakers anymore. I bought slide-in, laceless, wide foot shoes to be able to fit my swollen feet into. I ignored the symptoms and thought I was just doomed to have to deal with it for the rest of my life.

Also? It was getting so bad that my fingers were getting swollen. The knuckles on my fingers were being stretched to the point where you couldn't see the divots on the top of the knuckles. They were just flat and stretched. You know when you try to raise three fingers in the air by holding your pinkie with your thumb? Couldn't even do that given how swollen my hands would get. Thankfully all of these symptoms have subsided. It's nothing short of amazing what abuse our bodies can take and still rebound from.

Between cutting out alcohol and reducing calories, carbs, and controlling my diet, I've gone from 343 lbs. (380 lbs. at my absolute worst) to 316 lbs. and counting. And I only started changing my diet since about the beginning of July. I'm sure a lot of that was water weight, which my body REALLY needed to flush out, but it's still encouraging. As was mentioned in the video, I feel I'm getting up in the middle of the night less frequently to pee. I'm getting higher sleep scores according to my smart watch. I know I snore, but I imagine that's gotten better as well.

Another important note is how alcohol impacts your heart and heart rate. I noticed my heart rate, even when resting, was in the upper 90s. I'd also get notices from my watch that my heart rate would be up over 120 bpm while drinking. Not good. I ignored it. It's a miracle my heart put up with it for as long as it did. Since quitting alcohol, my bpms have dropped by about 15-20 on average, whether it be resting heart rate, walking heart rate, etc. Believe me, your heart will thank you for quitting.

You know, I felt that I had to drink to be funny and likeable. Trust me...you don't. I still try to be witty where I can be. I love being silly and making my friends and partner laugh. Yeah, the alcohol loosens you up more, but you just don't need it to be a likeable person. Please consider cutting it out of your life, at least for a month or two and see how your body heals and feels. I'm sure cutting out the empty calories will help.

Ethan, I wanted to thank you for your videos. I've been loosely following you since around The Butterfly Effect days (really enjoyed that movie a lot. Great performance in that movie!). A few years ago, I looked you up and saw just how much weight you'd lost. Not just that, but how BUFF you've gotten. It's truly inspirational. I'm not only impressed with how you've turned your life around, but how you've used your voice to help those who have been where you were before. People like us know how hard it is to deal with weight loss and maintaining that weight loss. But, at least for me, it's all just about adjusting how you think.

Keep up the excellent work! Sorry for the wall of text. I just had to chime in a little. Even if this helps just one person, I think all of us would be happy. Keep going, everyone. You can do this!
