I'm not Korean, but mukbangs really helped me when I went through chemo. Eating was so hard for me, the thought of eating food made feel anxious. So watching people enjoy food really helped me eat at least a little bit.

She explains a collectivist culture so well. I was born in a collectivist culture and moved to an individualist culture when I turned 17. And now 17 yrs later I live in a collectivist culture again. I learned about the concept of individualist & collectivist culture in college and it helped me understand and respect both cultures. I will say that living in fear of constant shame of “doing something wrong” is exhausting. I was exhausted and it created a weird dynamic where I didn’t even know who I was because I couldn’t explore my identity. Being homogenous was culturally demanded.

On the other hand, collectivist cultures generally care more about community. Be it because it’s a societal rule or because it’s genuine, I realized that living in an individualist society made me miss this aspect. Looking out for others and a huge emphasis on family and community.

From my experience, I can say that shame culture (no matter where in the world) breeds contempt, bitterness and a lot of judgment. If you can’t feel safe and food in your own body, it’s easier to project all those insecurities and desires on other people. And being repressed due to societal norms makes people act out (when they eventually do) and explode in massive ways.

May we all learn from each other and grow into healthy societies 🫶

In very social societies, say Italian or Mexican, Caribbean, or Indian where people are loud, happy, and often meet family members to eat together and they party often they don't feel the need to watch other people eat and live their lives. They have enough human interaction. I think that's why Koreans and Japanese have a lot of live streams with people eating etc. I actually remember one guy saying that he is lonely, so when he sits down to eat his lunch, he puts on a video with someone eating, so he feels less alone. That means people do need social interaction.

I love this podcast! You both are fabulous. What you are talking about is very interesting. I studied International Relations and now I'm a poet and often write poems about other countries, that's why I clicked on this video.

My husband is Caribbean, and I'm Polish and our kids are growing up in Scotland.

12:27 she’s talking about that “parasocial relationship” phenomenon that is so strong in some of these k-pop fandoms. I mean, it’s present in many types of arts, but the music industry seems to really have a high prevalence of fans feeling that they have a deeper connection their favorite artist than they really do.

My mother is East African and growing up when we were in trouble we would not look at the parent in the eyes. It was sign of disrespect . So when I was in school and the teacher would shout at me she would say look at me when I’m talking to you every time I looked down. It was one of the most challenging things growing up. Now I’m older found out I have adhd so not looking at anyones eyes anytime soon and I’m happy to be “strange”.

Cultural differences are insane. As a Moroccan I relate to the conservative side. Women don’t laugh loudly with strangers either it is seen as seduction.
But we are so different even from westerners. As Moroccan we have “big talks” like I could meet a stranger in a taxi and they will tell me their whole life, issues, etc. Everybody is everybody’s therapist.

I did go to Korea and I found the people friendly and very calm. I am going back for sure but I don’t expect to make friends there I feel like it’s a bit harder.

Im gonna say something that is irrelevant but I’m saying it with good intentions…This Korean lady is absolutely beautiful, her face is incredible, like other-worldly, in a very good way, ethereal - she is stunning 🌺 She also has a lovely deeper voice - I sub to a lot of Korean content creators and many of the women have quite high pitched voices, and they giggle a lot and it can get slightly irritating sometimes, this lady has such a soothing, calming voice, and she laughs rather than giggles. I like her 🙏
