To bring up point one. One of my favorite things in LOTR is Tom Bombadil and when asked Tolkien replied, "I have no idea why he is there, he just is."

The worst example of an info-dump I ever came across was in a story where the main character wakes up to find his village under attack by bandits. He grabs his bow and runs outside, crouching down behind the wheel of a burning wagon to see what’s going on. The writer then started to tell me about the character and world. It was a real ‘You have to be kidding me!’ moment.

This is why Tolkien and others have a separate document for the info dump. Worldbuild separately, then make it as a reference resource

One has to be careful when using characters to do infodumpling, too. I hate when a character explains stuff to another that they should know already.<br>-Hey, want to go out next Saturday? <br>-Saturday?<br>-Yes, you know, the sixth day of our week.<br>-Yes, of course<br>-Monday, Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the seven days that are part of our week

It sounded like the Romans were less interested in the past as much as they were with preserving the Republic. "Remember your ancestors" doesn't mean "Do whatever they did in the past" it meant "We already fought for a republic once; don't let it go to waste"

> "Remember your ancestors..."<br>> "He and 23 other senators..."<br>I guess that makes Marcus Junius Brutus the original 23andMe?

Terry Pratchett said he was on a panel with other authors, talking about how to invent a believable fantasy city, and Terry said you had to start by asking how the water got in and how the sh... er, waste got out. Which apparently did not sit well with the others.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1cdCDBMTpM&t=710">11:50</a> That reminds of a scene in C. S. Lewis’s <i>Narnia: The Horse and His Boy</i> where the main character had grown up in a fishing village. This was the description when he saw mountains for the first time: “Om the far side of it were huge blue things, lumpy but with jagged edges, and some of them with white tops.” Which feels like exactly how someone who has never seen them would describe mountains.
