Thank you for this and for your usual interesting notes.
Was Richard Lyon (Barney) the son of Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels who, with his sister Barbara, graced our radio waves in Britain in 'Life with the Lyons' in the 50s? I think they were black-listed and were amongst several actors and writers who made a living in Britain at that time (eg the Wanamakers).

I was attracted to this by Raymond Chandler's writing credit, and by one of my favourites, Herbert Marshall. Joel McCrea is also an attraction!

I had seen this movie before but it was well worth watching again. I have always been a big fan of the beautiful Gail Russell, known as the "Hedy Lamarr of Santa Monica" but if you look at younger and older pictures of Gail and Hedy, she was actually much more beautiful than Hedy Lamarr. It is sad that she died at such a young age from liver disease caused by severe alcoholism. After being discovered by a talent scout even though she had no experience acting she was signed to a long term contract with Paramount in 1942 at age 18 based solely on her ethereal beauty. But she suffered from severe stage fright and anxiety and was plied with alcohol and encouraged to drink to get over her anxiety and that led to her severe and chronic alcoholism. She had gotten three DUI's in just a few years often missed filming. It has been said John Wayne befriended her when many others in Hollywood were turning away from her and she was being turned down for roles because of her reputation for drinking. John Wayne insisted she be cast as the leading lady to play alongside him and the great Harry Carey in 'Angel and the Badman' in 1947. Gail shone in the role of a shy quaker girl 'Penelope Worth' who falls in love and reforms a somewhat rowdy and lawless cowboy 'Quirt Evans' played by John Wayne. The movie was a big hit but after a few more movies in the next three years Paramount studios declined to renew Gail Russell's contract because of her worsening drinking problem. It was really a shame because she was an above average student in High School but she was painfully shy. And her Mother threw her into the bright lights of Hollywood immediately upon graduation. She was An angelically beautiful leading lady with a demure and melancholy screen persona which reflected a deeper sadness in her real life. She was painfully, almost disabling shy as a child. She suffered from an intense and almost crippling stage fright which she began to combat with alcohol. Conflicts with the law, particularly drunk driving, damaged her reputation and her star began to dim. Befriended by John Wayne, with whom she was later accused (apparently unjustly) of conducting an adulterous affair, she played a few roles in films he produced. But her drinking began to affect not only her work but her appearance and her personal life. Married in 1949 to actor Guy Madison, she was divorced by him in 1954 (though she retained as her legal name his legal name, Moseley).

In 1961, at the age of 36, she died alone in her apartment of chronic alcoholism, an extremely fatty liver and terminal aspiration of stomach contents all while surrounded by empty liquor bottles. She will be remembered, however, as an incredible doe-eyed beauty who presented a screen image of great innocence and vulnerability.

Great cast. Not one more handsome and elegant than loel mcCrea and Herbert Marshall. Just learned few years ago Herbert Marshall lost his leg in WW1. Kept it private.
