I'm a person with depression, ocd, intrusive thoughts, and very high anxiety and I have long period of violent childhood trauma that stops me from ever believing that I deserve anything good in my life. I went to seek emdr therapy after an unexpected event triggering my old wound so fresh just like it happened yesterday. I decided i would get to the bottom of it and do something if anything could help.

Some therapists prefer once a week for several months, but I went with a therapist who believed doing it intensively for a short period of time works better, so it took 4 days with 2 sessions on each day. It was very intense and quite disturbing that I went through a very emotional roller coaster even after the session. I think I was processing about a few weeks after that.

What it did definitely helped with my old trauma. I almost feel like it was just one of the stories that happened to someone else so it doesn't hurt like piercing heart anymore(with an actual event that triggered the past trauma included). But it won't and can't fix everything like magic, no. I will say it made me to learn to deal with it much better. It takes a whole brain system to be re-wired to actually fix the past trauma. I've been living my whole 40 year life only knowing how to be miserable. My brain just resists to believe I don't have to live miserable life anymore, and those are all false stories that stuck in my head. So there is still more work to do, but emdr somewhat detached those photographic or cinematic memories that have been stuck from my head, like watching the same movie over and over and you get tired of it.

After getting a session with professional therapist, you can do it at home by yourself with different methods. But I recommend getting a real session with the therapist first. You can also use emdr with various areas in your life. I have a lot of fear even when I play sports. I do a session before I go play. If I have an argument or difficult situation, I'd do a session before it gets stuck on my mind as I'm very prone to collect negative emotions easily and magnify them. It's still helping for sure, but it can be a jorney for someone like me. No overnight fix, and there can be some side effects shortly after, but it’s the part of the process. Hope it helps someone.

Dear Caroline, Your experience about being re-traumatized when needing validation was a toxic and cruel response from your accuser. This session would not be as powerful if you didn't share your innermost feelings for those viewing. Thanks for your courage and tenacity in processing this whole event. It helps for many of us to know we are not alone in our journey out of painful life events. Great demo video that is highly relatable.

I just started emdr last week and have my second session today. It was hard the first day. I felt like I wasn’t doing it right. But this video was able to help me see how it works and have a better mindset of going in it today.

there are also the audio tones and kinetic pulses with tiny pads held in the hands instead of the light or following a finger.

My friend sent me Clara Hartley’s anxiety quiz with absolutely no explanation. She literally just said, “Take this and tell me what result you get.” That somehow makes me much more nervous than if she had explained why she sent it 😭
