There is no connector called nvme on a motherboard, just PCIe and the various versions of it. M.2 form factor is keyed differently which is one of the easiest ways to tell a PCIe based drive from a SATA based drive. M keys are generally used for SATA based drives and b keys for PCIe based drives.

Fun fact: nvme ports actually is pci-e, so u can plug rtx 5090 on trash router which has nvme port
