Fuck yeah, glazing TR1 for 4 hours, great vid. I've played it for the first time in 2023 and also really liked it, I just love the methodical platforming and slowly unraveling the layered puzzles in the levels. I don't think next installments of TR ever came close to what the first game achieved.

The real reason for the flipped level order in Unfinished Business is because the Atlantean Stronghold levels are meant to be an Epilogue to the main game. It’s a direct continuation, not a separate adventure where she returns at a later date. Lara doesn’t just slide down an endless slope into the sunshine at the end of the main game, she lands under the collapsed pyramid and has to fight her way out of the last stronghold destroying the last remaining Atlanteans.

The Egypt level is a separate adventure where she returns to Egypt in search of the cat statue. At some point they swapped the level order as they didn’t want the Atlantean Stronghold levels overriding the original intended ending, so they swapped the level order and added the description that Lara returns to the island to finish off one last hive.

The remaster returned the level order to what Phillip originally intended.

To answer a few of your questions to my knowledge:

For empty areas, in very early builds of Tomb Raider, Lara's basic pistols actually had limited ammo (which I'm glad they changed to avoid being defenseless) so when they made the pistols infinite ammo, they didn't actually it seems have time to replace all of the pistol ammo pickups so you have ambushes and semi-hidden areas that were supposed to have pistol ammo but just have nothing now.

The reason Natla's mines gets messed up is I assume due to a limitation of the engine, the reason every platform that "moves" into position in Tomb Raider PS1 is because the engine doesn't actually support moving objects, instead the game simply "flips" the room to another room in the same space (As either room can have several "flips" to go through) which is why they're never in spots where Lara is near the platform as you'd see it just suddenly phase into existence (and when TR4-5 used more complex props with animations to fake platforms that visibly move, they're never in spots where Lara can actually reach them before they're done moving.)

So I assume is that the "hanging" shed-thing is an object that is then scripted to disappear and spawn the regular shed once you put in all 3 fuses but going further than expected causes the game to think the regular shed should be there but not get rid of the hanging one.

Four hours of MNTM just as I pour my first drink for the night?
Yes, please.
Edit: I play Tomb Raider on the original hardware probably at least once a year.
It still holds up.

I've had this on as background noise while working. I always love hearing about other peoples' opinions on and experiences with the original Tomb Raider, especially in this level of detail. It's interesting to see where everyone got stuck versus what's unique to an individual's playthrough.

I agree that Egypt onwards is the developers saying, "Right, now you know the basics, the gloves are off." But I also really engaged with that. There were a lot of gotchas where, instead of frustration, I laughed and found myself saying, "Okay, they got me good with that one! Fair play." It makes it a really memorable game.

I love putting these videos on in the background while I draw, it’s great to keep me from overthinking about what I’m drawing, and is also really interesting and informative, still the best maker of game critiques:)
Been lookin forward to see the tomb raider video after all the comparisons u made to it in the men in black video!

Didn't think it was possible for a video to be this long without agent 47 needing to Use The Bathroom

1:12:41 I like to do the headstand at the end of a long platforming section. Like a celebratory thing 🙌
