Christ was tempted in order to satisfy the righteous requirements of the law. His perfection in the face of overt temptation and other tests demonstrated He is just and therefore the worthy substitute to stand in our stead in accepting the punishment that is due us -- the just dying for the unjust. The Divine Logos or Word united with a human nature to become the God-man. The Unipersonality of the Word did not change at the Incarnation. The Divine nature and the human nature co-exist in the Saviour without confusion so that Jesus Christ could be tempted but not be overcome by temptation. As Dr. W.G.T. Shedd noted, "He was not only able to overcome temptation, but He was unable to be overcome by it." Some Christians posit that the human nature of Christ could have sinned if left to itself. But the fact is, it was not and could not be left to itself.
