Nintendo really dodged a bullet by not working with Atari.

On Nov 23rd 1985 at age 13 I saved up to buy my very first gaming console with my own. At NYC in 1985 where me and my mother gone to 14th street and that same block where I got the NES Deluxe unit at the Woolworth store then the store closed in 97. The NES Deluxe Set was test market in NYC in Oct of 85 and one month later on my birthday on a Saturday afternoon. The same day I got the NES Deluxe Set for my birthday me and my mother gone and ate at Blimpies on northwest corner of 14th Street and 1st Avenue NYC (think of Subway before it was a thing) and I open one of the games and it was Super Mario Bros. Sadly Blimpies is no longer there.

I really don't mind the AI voice but "field programmable Gatorade technology" is hilarious 😂

By the time I got my basic Control Deck set in early 1988 for $79.99 (without the Zapper), it did not include Super Mario Brothers but a Player's Guide. I had to get "Super Mario Brothers" separately.
That Player's Guide, however, sparked my interest in "Metroid" because it had the game's full map.

I remember I had a friend who had the top down NES and he hated the dog bone controllers so we traded. I ended up falling in love with how much more comfortable they were and could never understand his gripe with them lol.

Every kid I knew in the 80s had a Nintendo. I don’t know anyone that had the robot.

Nobody wants to hear this, but... it was the variety. Nintendo knew they couldn't count on just Contra, or Super Mario Bros. 3, or Ninja Gaiden, or Tecmo Bowl, or Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, or Legend of Zelda, or Metroid, because there were plenty of players who didn't like fast-paced platformers or fantasy RPGs or football or space shooters. But you have every mainstream genre and plenty of quirky offshoots like City Connection, Wall Street Kid, Excitebike, Kid Icarus, Rollergames, Nuts & Milk, and Monster Party, and there's something for everybody.
