Why does it overshoot? Shouldn’t the thermostat take care of that?

Tim, I see you started heat soak at just after midnight until 5.30am. How did you arrive at starting so early? Would starting later say 3am not achieve the same result but with less heat input?

Hi Tim.
I'm starting to look into A2A heat pump installers in my area of Somerset. I find dozens of A2W installers but can't seem to find any specific A2A ones. Did you use a local firm or a regional one? You mentioned somewhere that there are some that know about aircon but don't seem to understand the heating component and heat loss calculations so do you know of any reliable directory? Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Peter

Hi
My question is: how reliable is A2A in terraced houses keeping humidity low, damp low and temperature high ? Will it be good in a 1920s house (as compared to a new build)? Will we have to run it 24 hours for 3 months in winter?

For further context, we live in a terraced house which is draughty in some rooms and has high ceilings. We had damp problems which were attributed to low heating capacity of radiators and high humidity. We have managed to bring down humidity by turning on dehumidifier everyday for couple of hours. For keeping warm, we still struggle in the winters despite running radiators in all rooms for 8-12 hours. Keeping the radiator on for this long also helps in reducing damp as house stays warmer for that long as radiator has residual heat.

Thanks for the video, just a thought, shouldn't the indoor units be positioned lower down near the floor? Heat rises and thus the ceiling will be the main recipient of the heat output.

Late to the party, but my rule of thumb is: Slow and low with good insulation, on demand with poor insulation.
Constantly compensating for large heat losses would be uneconomical, but compensating for small heat losses as they occur is very sensible. The beauty of A2A configurations is that they can do both well: quickly provide and distribute heat when needed, but also continuously deliver finely dosed heat – provided, of course, that the system is properly dimensioned according to the building conditions.

Are you planning on doing an update video? I really like these optimisation videos. I have an a2a system and each year brings new understandings and ideas.

This summer I shifted the A2A control on an oldschool timeclock over to home assistant + added in (software wise) 2x set-points for the rooms.

The house now maintains a minimum temp of 18º then topping up to ~20º during the day at various timed points - i.e. warm first thing and evenings and a top-up midday. Left to its own devices the house would normally drop to 15-17º overnight.

Especially taking into account most of the overnight is off peak juice feels like a better configuration - TBH I haven't done detailed maths on it - but the monthly power bill hasn't significantly moved and the house is more generally warm.

i.e. I'm anecdotally aligned with your more methodical findings! :)

Great video! We’ve got a 5way multi split and have been running it overnight during cheap tariff as per your recommendation. However I wonder how much thermal efficiency of the house comes into it. I presume you estimated your house heat loss and it played a big factor in the whether this strategy is effective?

Can you show us a video of your outdoor units and GivEnergy plugs?

can you connect to Home Assistant? You could automate shut off when cycling and evening turn off when temps overshoot

Tim. Belated question. Did you have to get planning permission for your 2 outdoor units ?
a) Didn't ask.
b) Yes
c) Did you actually need it ?
d} Not saying..
My heating surveyor came around re adding Air to Water HP as our A2A units only in 2 of 4 rooms and looked at my wall units and told me to check with council planning. NB new rules on ASHP do not apply retrospectively to A2A installed prior to May ?
