How a Great White Shark Survives an Orca Hunt

How does a great white shark survive when a pod of orcas begins hunting it? This wildlife documentary follows a young great white shark as one of the ocean's most famous predators suddenly becomes prey. The juvenile great white is already more than two metres long, armed with rows of serrated teeth, powerful swimming muscles and highly developed senses. But the approaching orcas are larger, social, intelligent and capable of hunting together. Orcas have been documented hunting juvenile great white sharks by striking them, controlling their movement and attempting to roll them upside down. Inverted sharks can enter a state known as tonic immobility, temporarily reducing their ability to escape. The target can be even more surprising: the shark's energy-rich liver. But a great white's most effective response to an approaching killer whale may not be fighting. It may be leaving. White sharks have been observed rapidly abandoning productive feeding grounds after killer whales arrive, sometimes remaining away long after the orcas have disappeared. Follow this young shark as it detects the approaching pod, accelerates toward open water, avoids coordinated attacks and learns one of the most important survival lessons in the ocean: even an apex predator must know when to escape.
