The thing I always appreciated is how they didn't fall into the "horrible stepfather" trope! That guy is genuinely a nice person, who is just doing the best he can with what he's been dealt. A <i>dependable</i> option, which makes the stakes more real in an otherwise ridiculous scenario.

Carey is a brilliant physical comedian. His faces and mannerisms are so over the top but the dude just fully commits and absolutely sells it. Truly a unique talent and one of the greats.

Dumb and Dumber is probably his funniest role. The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind are probably the most interesting.

Something I forgot to mention, IIRC the whole bit with the Claw is something Jim borrowed from his childhood, as it was something his dad used to do.
