In this episode of The Resource Podcast, Becky sits down with Shayne McKinnon and Ana Trenwith, the team behind FlowAid and the Flowaid Standard, ahead of their live launch event next week. Shayne spent years in project management, IT operations and business leadership roles, often the only woman in the room, before her time in the drilling industry showed her a gap nobody had built a real solution for. Ana brought a background in complex organisational systems, and together they turned a practical kit into an operational standard now being adopted across some of Australia's most remote and high risk workplaces.
What started as a simple idea, on site access to hygiene and period products and some straightforward guidance for site leaders, grew fast once the feedback came in. When Shayne surveyed the workforce, every single role responded, from senior leadership down to green crew, and the answer was the same across the board: this is a real problem. That's when Ana came on board to help systemise it into the Flowaid Standard, mapped across five operational pillars and built to sit alongside the safety systems these workplaces already understand.
Becky, Shayne and Ana also get into just how far people have had to go without it. Workers making pads out of bags with gaffer tape on the bottom. Stacking three layers of period products just to get through a shift. Skipping periods altogether on birth control without knowing what it might cost their hormone health down the line. Ana opens up about a decade long health battle that's made her periods incredibly difficult to manage, plus a surgical procedure in her teens that left her with continence issues so severe she says she'd never personally take a job in a remote environment because of the toilet access alone. And when Ana's own daughter's school camp cut off shower access for three days and the school called the fallout "resilience training," it became personal all over again.
This episode is for anyone who has ever quietly managed a basic need at work because there was no other option, and for any leader who wants to know what actually fixing that looks like, not a policy on paper, but a system people can rely on.
In this episode they cover:
The four hour drive with no plan for where to go to the toilet, and the moment that started it all
Why 100% of one workforce's anonymous survey came back saying the exact same thing
What people are actually using on site when there's no period product available
Growing up with a single dad and using her own pocket money to buy pads at 11 years old
A decade long health battle that's made periods incredibly difficult to manage at work
The school camp that cut off shower access for three days and called it "resilience training"
Why the fix costs about as much as a box of tampons, and why that's part of the problem
The five pillars now defining what doing this properly actually looks like
What's coming at next week's live launch event
