  As a protestant who went to a Catholic school, I found out quickly that mentioning Jesus brothers could derail religion class.

  If there&apos;s anything that unites world languages, it&apos;s the fact that familial terms can be twisted beyond recognition while being perfectly grammatical. In Japanese, a bunch of familial terms, including older siblings are also used to refer to any male or female in an arbitrary age bracket.

  I grew up as a non-Catholic Christian so I was extremely confused when I later learned that this debate even exists when the actual Biblical text talks about his brothers so matter-of-factly. I always thought that the point of Mary&apos;s virginity was the impossibility, and thus divinity, of Jesus&apos; birth, but requiring her to stay virgin in perpetuity even after that felt like her losing her virginity could somehow &quot;undo&quot; Jesus&apos; divinity.
