I was AF, not marines, but this story still applies. There was a guy i went to MEPs with, flew to basic with, and receiving with. We became friends in the short time we knew each other. We ended up getting split up into different units at basic, and i never saw him again in my career. After I finished my enlistment and went back to my home city, I ran into the guy working the register at a BBQ restaraunt chain. Turned out, he failed the drug test at basic training and was booted with an entry level discharge. He thought he was ok since he already passed the entry drug screening at MEPs, and just had to smoke a "going away" bowl with his buddies before shipping out.

Fastest way out of basic is to graduate.  If you quit they keep you there at least until you would have graduated

In basic for the Air Force, some of the instructors threw out a trick question, asking who would like to be sent home. I was feeling very discouraged, so I raised my hand. That was a big mistake, because they saw me as a quitter and they harassed me the whole time. This was my fault, but I went from feeling discouraged to extremely depressed, I even thought about self-harm to get out of there. But I had a kind of epiphany, something like God Himself was speaking to me in a way, and let me know that He would take care of me. And you know, that gave me the motivation I needed. I did wind up getting pushed back a week but I still was able to graduate and get sent to my job training and duty station.

I caught pneumonia during my 3rd week of bootcamp and spent a week in the hospital.  I had to redo that week and graduated with no problems.

I hated being a recruiter! But I loved running into my kids out in the fleet, or overseas. One of my best success stories actually relieved me when I retired.

Heard of a guy that quit and kept getting recycled and ended up going home several months after his original group he went in with. It would’ve been better for him to just finish at first.

Former Army here. In my platoon of about 40 or so back in 2011, I think we had 4 or 5 actually quit. All but one were the typical homesick crap, the "I miss my family, I miss home" stuff, but one kid just constantly refused to follow orders. After like 6 weeks of it, my drill sergeants finally got tired of it and called him to the kill box in our barracks, made the rest of us toe the line, and made him tell all of us that he didn't want to be there and that he was quitting. The morale of the platoon got way better afterwards. We were all told during our first real week of boot that graduating was the fastest way to get out, so just use whatever you needed to motivate you through it. I just made sure to do as I was told, pass everything we were being graded on, and just take it one day at a time, one task at a time. The time flew by, and I graduated no problem.

All branches know they are going to have some attrition. That's why they constantly do statistical studies.

I was female Army 1977 boot camp but everything applies. We had a tragic case in boot camp. We had a female that they discovered during that time that she had a progressive neuromuscular disease that would end up with her in a wheelchair. This totally came out of left field during basic. It was heartbreaking but this is where I gained tons of admiration for my drill sergeant. Right after the heartbreaking diagnosis, my drill sergeant spent a couple of nights right at her bedside just so she could cry, vent, etc. She was there for her the entire process of her being medically discharged. <br>Guess what I&apos;m saying is if you think you have something to disclose, disclose it. Don&apos;t be scared to do it. This case was the exception but things happen.

A memory brought on by you saying medical or mental issues that disqualify you: When I was at Parris Island we had this recruit who came in and was an alcoholic. No one was aware. We were in the second phase, at the range, and he was made the gear locker recruit. Of course, he controlled cleaning supplies and access to the Listerine. The drill instructors were pissed because Listerine kept disappearing faster than it should have. One of our drill instructors did a walk-through one night, screwing with the firewatch and found the recruit holed up in the head with Listerine. Passed out lying on the floor. They had to call for an ambulance. The guy had been drinking the whole damn time, and I am surprised he didn&apos;t kill himself.
