One morning I'll see a zucchini the size of my thumb, "oh, how cute". The next day I'll go out and its almost perfect size, "I need to pick that tomorrow". The 3rd day i go out to the garden and it's the size of my lower leg. Slight exaggeration, but close to reality.

Another for those who like it; okra. 6 or 12 plants can deliver plenty once it's 85f or more.

Herbs would absolutely top my list. Oregano, rosemary, basil, marjoram, parsley, thyme, sage. All very prolific and herbs both fresh and dried cost a fortune in the store. They also top my list for return on investment. Many will grow in shade or partial shade...make great companion plants...deter pests...and can last for years in many locations.

Pole beans are fantastic to grow inside in the winter hydroponically (which I do). For cucumbers let me plug Burpee's Merlin hybrid. They are gynecious (all female flowers) and they are parthenocarpic (don't require pollination to produce fruit). Because they don't require pollination the fruit has no seeds. No seeds means the plant keeps producing all season as long as you keep them healthy. The plant tries all season to produce seeds but because the fruit is seedless the plant doesn't mature and slow down production. What I use for cherry tomatoes is just ordinary 3 foot tall garden fence. It comes in rolls and you just unroll enough to make a cylinder that works for your own arm and hand lengths, use zip ties to close the open side, and then 4 garden staples to anchor it to the ground. Cherry tomatoes are also fantastic for indoor hydroponics in the winter.
