Bought a brand new regulator setup last year. Had the shop transfer all my other hoses and such to the new Reg. Had them service the unit to make sure it was good to go. Catastrophic failure of the second stage about 10 minutes into first dive on vacation.
(Personal Opinion) New, Used, Serviced, Not Serviced... Doesnt matter. Training and having your dive buddy close enough to maul getting his octo out matters.

regulators : generally sound advise, but all the flaws are remedied with one simple action that you should do anyway-- bring to a service center for a full recon. If, after service you have still saved money, its money well saved.

BCDs : they are very robust pieces, hardly ever you will have a problem. Test before buying or dont buy. And like all gear-- inspect and service regularly and you'll be fine with a used piece.

tanks : my STRONGEST objection here. Tanks are essentially a commodity, they retain their value and performance over decades. And yes, you need to run the regular inspections anyway, weather its new or used, so, why wouldnt you buy a used one? Again, its the same as with the regulator -- just bring it to the service get all the inspections cleared and you're good to go. Half my fleet is new, half are used. There is no difference, they all need servicing the same way. Its just steel & aluminum. If your advise was "dont get a used tank and then immediately go try to fill it and dive with it" I would agree. But to say, dont buy used tanks for your own fleet is ridiculous advise.

dive computers : generally I agree. Anything electronic I would prefer to buy new, since electronic equipment tends to have the shortest lifespan underwater and getting a used computer, torch, DPV, etc. are sketchy propositions. But a year or two old computer wouldnt worry me. And you can wipe the old logs, factory reset, so that is not a problem.

wetsuits (&drysuits) : yes. Because its a very intimate item, its like your underwear almost. If you must get a used one due to budget constraints, do it. Its not like it will put you in danger. The risk presented that it will rip and you will get cold... i mean, come on. Can happen to anyone at anytime, you just abort the dive then. A used suit wont put you in danger in the same way if a reg, a BC or computer failed. But I agree, dont look at the used market for suits. Get your own.

I was listening to make sure cylinders got mentioned. I still see 40 year old aluminum tanks for sale online that should have been recalled before 1990. Most tanks I see online have not been hydro-ed or visually inspected. You have no way to know if a cylinder has been in a house fire, or maybe someone tried powder coating it. Used tanks are a bad gamble.

If you use brand new gear one time, it's now used gear. The price drops dramatically. I prefer to buy used gear. Except for wetsuits, I don't want to wear someone else's pee.
