On a braded shield, I don't untangle the shield. I push it back a bit, open a space in the shield right near the outer cover, then pull the internal conductors up through the opening in shield. No shield damage, no hairs, very neat. Saves time, too.

Sick advice and tips, Dave! I'm a cable noob, so I really appreciate that you provide your expertise in these videos. Really excited to use these strats on my electronics projects when it comes to shielded cable.

"Cable Time with Dave" FUN!
I just installed 14 stage pockets (4 or 8 XLR each) using CAT-6A FTP. 4 channels per cable using the drain/shield as a common ground. Works great, and was much cheaper and easier than using purpose made audio snake cable.
Cheers!

Thanks for making these videos - really interesting information, I didn't realise there was so much to the inners of XLRs! In the video series, do you discuss which types of cable are best suited for which environment?

Hey Dave. Thanks for informing the masses.
It bay be better, for discerning minds, to measure jacket resistance over a length of cable.
If you want to get creative, tie them in multiple knots and slap them around like a new guy that doesn't know over under first.
But a resistance check of a quarter inch doesn't rep a cable, only an junction.
Live long and rock on.
