  Rail crossing signal arms are designed to break easily if a vehicle backs into them. You&apos;ll scratch your car when doing so, but you&apos;ll also save your life.

  When you said the driver was “not found to be responsible” my first thought was “I should f-ing hope not!” He not only did what he could with a bad situation, he went above and beyond by going back to help other people.

  Former US railway employee here. It cannot be said loud enough that crossing gates are designed to break away easily when hit by a vehicle to prevent drivers from being trapped on the tracks. <br><br>You should never stop on a crossing, but if you find yourself in that situation, forget about your car&apos;s paint and drive through the gate. Once we hit the brakes, there&apos;s nothing else we can do for you. <br><br>I&apos;m in no way trying to blame a victim, only trying to prevent the creation of more.

  I feel sorry for the driver of the train who took action to help others escape the burning car. &nbsp;I can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been to be questioned about his actions in such a freak accident.

  My EMT professor was one of the first responders to the scene. He could only describe the injuries as purely horrific. Unlike anything he’d previously seen.

  Way back when I was a teen, I witnessed a train hit a car at a crossing. &nbsp;The driver had neglected to stop at the red light. &nbsp;The crossing did not have barriers. &nbsp;Instead, a red light was utilized when a train was approaching. &nbsp;The driver ran the red light. &nbsp;<br><br>It’s a sight I will NEVER forget.
