My son had been in a horrible crash and was on life support and was DOC for over 40 days. He was watching the video from Hill song, "What A Beautiful Name It Is The Name Of Jesus " I watched as the Spirit of God came upon my son as he was weeping before God. He had a trach in, he had suffered a serious brain injury, to which some of the doctors had given no hope of recovery from such an horrible injury. So, this being said. Yes, we do have to know the lyrics of a song and does the worship song bring ministry and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. I just wanted to share that even tho things are very questionable about Hillsong and others on what their agenda may or may not be, this particular song about the name of Jesus, brought such an beautiful presence of God that filled the room and for that , I'm so thankful.

12:00 I disagree that this is “Me-Centered Theology”, because the songwriters are admitting that they do not have the same qualities as Moses, David, Mary, etc. They are asking God for His help in these situations in order to show God’s glory.

I get the whole don't have a "me, me, me" centered theology argument but the truth is, these stories in the Bible IS about God using people who are insignificant, lowly, struggling with personal issues to accomplish his will. His word is written absolutely to allow us to put ourselves in the shoes of those who've gone before and to look at the amazing grace AND power that God displays to and FOR his people who both had small faith and also at times had great faith! I believe we can draw correlations between the biblical characters and our own lives and its not a sin to do so. Don't get me wrong I do agree with much of what you said. But, I also think sometimes the focus of removing "ME" theology from our lives can also strip away the very real reality that God is for us on a very deep and personal level and we need to acknowledge it and sometimes focus on it to get it deep inside that this faith walk..It is both about us and about God, that is what it means to have a personal relationship. God has not changed.. It's not ONLY about us all the time, but it is there to remind us that God is the same for us and with us as he was for David, and Moses, and Esther etc... We do have our own giants that require dependency on our God to overcome. We do have trials and tribulations that we have to gird up our loins, sing to ourselves a reminder for our minds , heart and spirits that God IS for his people, and that he has done great and mighty deeds for his people in the past and he does not change. I believe that is what some of those songs are attempting to do. It reminds me of the spiritual songs that the slaves would sing to themselves reminding them of a God who leads, of better places we will go to, of the great king that overcomes.
I also think that not every song that is labeled as a worship song today is in actuality a worship song but is rather more of a "spiritual song" . And, the Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:19 tells us to address each other in Psalms, and hymns, and spiritual singing making melody to the Lord with your heart. This seems to speak to me that there are different types of songs dedicated to worshipping God in our heart. Not every song has to be chalk full of theology directing us to the cross, YES absolutely it should be about God more and man less (but I don't think it has to have every line and verse be a theological point is what I mean). I absolutely 💯 % think we should evaluate lyrics and if a particular band has a habit of making only self centered songs then probably not the best idea to listen to them but, some songs I would probably classify as more of a spiritual song rather than a worship song. To me worship is more to enter into his presence reminding ourselves of who God is, and thanking him for his presence, guidance etc.. Spiritual songs seem to me to be more of encouragement for believers of multiple spiritual issues. I totally could be wrong but that's kindof my take on it. Having a relationship is both about the person and also about the God who leads us though. Great video! You were cracking me up with the faces you were making when you were jamming to some of the songs you played 🤭😆

I have to respectfully disagree about the elevation song. The word says in Romans chapter 2 that God is no respecter of persons. The people in the Bible that God used for mighty things were every day people that had their own flaws but we’re given strength by our savior or God. If you’ve ever experienced anything that seems like the Red Sea or a Goliath, you would understand this. For instance, I am blind, I’ve had to go through A brain surgery that I should not have survived to remove a tumor, as well as many other things. These were my red seas and God was there.

As a worship leader, I am super devoted to looking for lyrics that are theologically sound and tossing out the rest. In saying that, we all have to be careful not to go overboard and set an unreachable standard (I have been warned of this). At first, I felt like I couldn’t set too high of a standard, but then I realized that it is easy to become so focused on “truth” that you miss the “spirit” of worship. In John 4:24, we are called to worship in spirit and in truth. You can’t have one without the other or your worship will be unbalanced. No spirit, all truth = legalism. No truth, all spirit = liberalism/false doctrine/secular music. God promotes order and balance. ❤️

I really respect the effort to hold Christian song lyrics to the standard and integrity of the Word of God. In saying that, metaphorical language was used a whole lot by Job and in the book of Psalms. I do not believe that David saved up his tears, roasted them over a fire, and ate them, yet he said "my tears have been my meat day and night..." Nor am I one of those that believes every little thing that's hard for me to comprehend is a metaphor. i.e. I really believe Nebuchadnezzar had his 7 year stint of being humbled and living like an animal. In saying that, songwriters or can we say "Psalm"writers should be allowed some creative license (David certainly had it) to be artistic in imagery as long as it does not contradict the Word of God. It is part of their God-appointed giftings after all.

I am so glad that you discussed the “me ness” of worship songs today. I had just recently been thinking maybe it was too much about what God can do for us. You had good thoughts about it. Thx

With the lyric about Him leaving His throne to build His kingdom here inside...made me think it's just talking about how He left all of heaven to come down to earth as man to make a way for us to know Him and in doing that...He would then start buying His kingdom through us, living inside each of us. That's how I took it :)

Same God - Elevation Worship

The Bible says that Elijah (one of the greatest men in the entire Bible) was a man like us (see James 5:17) so I don't see a problem with asking God to help us like He helped people in the Bible.

In Same God I love the line "I may not face Goliath but I have my own giants". It's not so much identifying with David himself but with the impossible situation that he was in.
