:face-turquoise-covering-eyes:Apologies for spelling RISC (Reduced instruction set computer) as Risk - just stupid brain failure! 😖

The BBC also came out in the BBC B+ range of expanded memory versions 64K and 128K. They came out before the Master System.

I grew up with the Spectrum 16K, 48K, 128K and finally +3 but a friend had an Electron and I really liked the colourful graphics style on it. I remember games like Hobgoblin, the golden figurine, Magic mushrooms and of course Repton. I must pick one up at some point, really enjoyed it back in the day.

Part of the 32k "ROM" was actually memory mapped IO for the interface chips.

The 32k was split into two 16k ROM areas. One was the machine OS (including the memory mapped IO) and the other was the "language" ROM which were "sideways" ROM - IIRC 16 could be swapped into that memory (one at a time). The base machine had a BASIC ROM there and most users added a Disk Filing System there (in the same address space). You could add other "language" ROMs, eg Pascal, Word processor, terminal emulator, and not even have the BASIC ROM installed.

The Electron not having a serial port and modern retrofits seeming less than straightforward really does go to show that life doesn't really go as one might hope. That said, I'm really hoping to get a passable case with a fixable keyboard that I can plonk a Pi into and scratch all the itches.

I had an Electron back in the day. It meant i could carry on my Computer Studies project programmes at home. And so finish my coursework ahead of others. Mine had issues with the ULA. I remember having a stack of Cardboard inside the case on top of the ULA which kept pressure on the chip when the case was put back together. That kept it running ok.

I learnt to program on a BBC Model B using the Pascal ROMs (and a copy of Findlay and Watts book on Pascal). Thanks to that machine (and book), I've been a professional software developer for past 35 years.
