Retired military here. One reason for the punishment for left and right, and 4 inches is..<br>If you cannot do basic tasks correctly you cannot be trusted to do more complicated tasks. Having to think about what direction is left can be costly under enemy fire.

During the shooting range scene when Leonard is being complimented by Hartman, you can see him sneaking the extra rounds he will later use to end them both.

What makes this film even more unique is that it features No scenes in the jungle… that’s unheard of for a Vietnam movie.

The bit about your body being military property is no joke. A buddy of mine got a bad sunburn which led to sun-poisoning and a few days at a rear aid station, while deployed to Iraq in the early 2000's. Got his pay docked for "Destruction of military property".

The fact that a lot of people don’t remember the end of the movie is really a testament to how incredible the first half of this film is

Dude went all in on this one. Kubrick movies are rollercoasters, u can dig deep for years, and still find some new interpretation.
